शांत, सनातन, अपरिमित (प्रमाणों से परे), निष्पाप, मोक्ष का स्वरूप परमशांति प्रदान करने वाले, ब्रह्मा, शंकर, और अनन्तशयन से सदैव पूजित, वेदांत के माध्यम से जानने योग्य, सर्वव्यापक, सभी देवताओं में अग्रणी, माया से मानव रूप में प्रकट होने वाले, सभी पापों को नष्ट करने वाले, दयामयी की खान, रघुकुल में श्रेष्ठ, और राजाओं के मुख्य राम कहलाने वाले जगदीश की मैं पूजा करता हूँ।

I worship the tranquil, eternal, immeasurable (beyond proof), sinless, bestower of ultimate peace in the form of liberation, always worshiped by Brahma, Shambhu, and Anantashayan, knowable through Vedanta, all-pervading, foremost among all deities, appearing in human form from Maya, destroyer of all sins, treasure of compassion, the best in the Raghu dynasty, and known as the chief of kings, Lord Rama, the Jagadishwara.

हे रघुनाथजी! मैं सत्य कहता हूँ और फिर आप सबके अंतरात्मा हैं (सब जानते हैं) कि मेरे हृदय में कोई अन्य इच्छा नहीं है। हे रघुकुलश्रेष्ठ! मुझे अपनी निर्भरा (पूर्ण) भक्ति दीजिए और मेरे मन को काम आदि दोषों से मुक्त कीजिए।

O Raghunathji! I speak the truth, and then it is known to everyone’s soul (everyone knows) that there is no other desire in my heart. O Best of the Raghu dynasty! Grant me your dependent (complete) devotion and rid my mind of desires and other faults.

अतुल बल के धाम, सोने के पर्वत (सुमेरु) के समान कान्तियुक्त शरीर वाले, दैत्य रूपी वन (को ध्वंस करने) के लिए अग्नि रूप, ज्ञानियों में अग्रगण्य, संपूर्ण गुणों के निधान, वानरों के स्वामी, श्री रघुनाथजी के प्रिय भक्त पवनपुत्र श्री हनुमानजी को मैं प्रणाम करता हूँ।

Incomparable in strength, with a body shining like the golden mountain (Mount Sumeru), resembling fire to destroy the demon-like forest, foremost among the knowledgeable, the treasure of all virtues, and the lord of the monkeys, I pay my respects to Shri Hanumanji, the beloved devotee of Shri Raghunathji

जाम्बवान के सुंदर वचन सुनकर हनुमानजी के हृदय को बहुत प्रिय लगे। (वे बोले-) हे भाई! तुम लोग दुःख सहकर, कन्द-मूल-फल खाकर तब तक मेरी राह देखना।

Hanumanji was very pleased to hear Jambavan’s beautiful words. He said, “Brothers! You all endure suffering, eat roots and fruits, and keep looking for my path.

राम के चरणों में राम की भक्ति में मन लगाकर, हनुमानजी ने यह कहा, “जब तक मैं सीताजी को नहीं देखता, मैं काम करने के लिए तत्पर रहूंगा, क्योंकि मुझे अत्यधिक आनंद हो रहा है।” इसके बाद, हनुमानजी ने मस्तक को नमस्कार किया, अपने मन में श्री रघुनाथजी को स्मरण किया, और हर्षित होकर चल दिए।

Hanuman said, ‘I will remain eager to work until I see Sita Ji, as I am filled with great joy.’ Saying this, and bowing to everyone, and holding Shri Raghunath Ji in his heart, Hanuman happily departed.

समुद्र के तट पर एक सुंदर पर्वत था। हनुमानजी खेलते हुए उस पर्वत पर उछले और बार-बार श्री रघुनाथजी का स्मरण करते हुए, हनुमानजी उससे बड़े वेग से उछले।

On the shore of the ocean, there was a beautiful mountain. Hanuman, playing, leaped onto that mountain and, repeatedly remembering Shri Raghunath Ji, Hanuman jumped from it with great speed.

हनुमान जी उस पर्वत पर पैर रखकर चले, उसी समय वह पाताल में धंस गए, जैसे श्री रघुनाथजी का अमोघ बाण चलता है, उसी प्रकार हनुमान जी चले।

समुद्र ने उन्हें श्री रघुनाथजी का दूत समझकर मैनाक पर्वत से कहा कि हे मैनाक! तुम इनकी थकान दूर करने वाले हो (अर्थात्‌ अपने ऊपर इन्हें विश्राम दे)।

Hanuman placed his foot on that mountain and immediately sank into the netherworld, just as the formidable arrow of Shri Raghunathji moved, in the same way, Hanuman moved.

The ocean, considering them as the messenger of Shri Raghunathji, said to them from the Manak mountain, “Hey Manak! You are the one who removes their fatigue (meaning, give them rest upon yourself).”

हनुमान ने उसे हाथ से स्पर्श किया, फिर प्रणाम करके कहा- भगवान रामचंद्रजी का कार्य किए बिना मुझे विश्राम कहाँ?

Hanuman touched him with his hand, then bowed and said, “Brother! Without doing Lord Ramchandra’s work, where can I find rest?”

देवताओं ने पवनपुत्र हनुमान्‌जी को जाते हुए देखा। उनकी विशेष शक्ति और बुद्धि को जानने के लिए उन्होंने सुरसा नामक सर्पिणी को भेजा, जोने आकर हनुमान जी से यह बात कही।

“The gods saw Lord Hanuman going. To know about his special strength and intelligence, they sent Surasa, the mother of snakes, who came and said this to Hanuman.”

आज देवताओं ने मुझे भोजन दिया है। इस वचन को सुनकर पवनपुत्र हनुमान्‌जी ने कहा- “श्री रामजी का कार्य करके मैं लौट आऊँगा और सीताजी की खबर प्रभु को सुना दूँ।”

Today, the gods have given me food. Upon hearing this, Lord Hanuman said emotionally, “By completing Shri Ram’s work, I will return and inform the Lord about Sita’s well-being.”

“तब मैं आकर तुम्हारे मुख में घुस जाऊंगा (तुम मुझे खा लेना)। हे माता! मैं सत्य कहता हूं, अभी मुझे जाने दे। जब किसी भी तरीके से उसने मुझे जाने नहीं दिया, तो हनुमानजी ने कहा- तो फिर मुझे खा न ले।”

“Then I will come and enter your mouth (you can eat me). O mother! I am telling the truth, let me go now. When he did not let me go by any means, then Hanumanji said – so don’t eat me.”

उसने योजनभर (चार कोस में) मुँह फैलाया। तब हनुमान्‌जी ने अपने शरीर को उससे दूना बढ़ा लिया। उसने सोलह योजन का मुख किया। हनुमान जी तुरंत ही बत्तीस योजन के हो गए।

He spread his influence (within four kos). Then Hanuman increased his body to twice that size. He made the face of sixteen kos. Hanuman Ji immediately became thirty-two kos.

जैसे-जैसे सुरसा का चेहरा विस्तार करता गया, हनुमानजी ने उसका दोहरा स्वरुप दिखाया। वह सौ योजन (चार सौ कोस) का चेहरा बना लिया। तब हनुमानजी ने एक बहुत ही छोटे स्वरुप को अपनाया।

As Surasa’s face expanded, Hanumanji revealed her double form. He made it a hundred yojanas (four hundred kos) in size. Then Hanumanji assumed a very tiny form.

उसने उसके मुख में प्रवेश किया और तत्काल बाहर निकल आए, फिर उससे सिर झुकाकर विदा मांगने लगे। (उसने कहा-) मैंने तुम्हारे बुद्धि-बल का रहस्य खोज लिया है, जिसके लिए देवताओं ने मुझे भेजा था।

He entered into his mouth and immediately came out, then started asking for leave by bowing his head. (He said-) I have discovered the secret of your intelligence, for which the gods had sent me.

तुम श्री रामचंद्रजी के सभी कार्य करोगे, क्योंकि तुम बल-बुद्धि के भंडार हो। इस आशीर्वाद के साथ वह चली गई, तब हनुमानजी हर्षित होकर चले।

You will perform all the tasks of Shri Ramachandra because you are a storehouse of strength and intelligence. With this blessing, she went away, and then Hanumanji happily walked away.

समुद्र में एक दैत्यिनी निवास करती थी। वह माया से आकाश में उड़ते हुए पक्षियों को पकड़ लेती थी। जल में उनकी परछाईं देखकर आकाश में उड़ने वाले जीव-जंतु उनकी ओर आकर्षित हो जाते थे।

There was a demoness living in the sea. She would use her magic to catch the birds flying in the sky. Seeing their shadows in the water, the creatures flying in the sky were attracted to her.

उस छाया को पकड़ लेती थी, जिससे वे उड़ नहीं सकते थे (और जल में गिर पड़ते थे) इस प्रकार वह सदा आकाश में उड़ने वाले प्राणियों को खाना खिलाती थी। उसने वही चाल हनुमान्‌जी से भी की। हनुमान्‌जी ने तुरंत ही उसका चालाकी पहचान लिया।

She would catch that shadow, preventing them from flying (and falling into the water), thus, she would feed on creatures that always flew in the sky. She played the same trick with Hanumanji. Hanumanji immediately recognized her deceit.

पवनपुत्र धीरबुद्धि वीर श्री हनुमानजी उस दिशा में चले गए, जहाँ समुद्र था। वहाँ पहुंचकर उन्होंने वन की सुंदरता को देखा। भौंरे मधु की खुशबू से भरे हुए फूलों में घूम रहे थे।

Son of the wind, the brave and wise Lord Hanuman, went in that direction where the ocean lay. Upon reaching there, he beheld the beauty of the forest. Bees were buzzing around the flowers filled with the fragrance of honey.

अनेक प्रकार के पेड़-पौधों के फल-फूल आकर्षक हैं। पक्षियों और पशुओं के समूह को देखकर वे बहुत प्रसन्न हुए। एक विशाल पर्वत को देखकर हनुमानजी भय छोड़कर उस पर दौड़कर चढ़े।

There are various types of trees adorned with fruits and flowers. They were very pleased to see groups of birds and animals. Seeing a huge mountain, Hanumanji left fear and ran up to it.

(शिवजी कहते हैं-) हे उमा! इसमें वानर हनुमान्‌ की कुछ प्रशंसा नहीं है. यह प्रभु की महिमा है, जो समय को भी भक्षित कर लेता है। पर्वत पर चढ़कर उन्होंने लंका को देखा. यहाँ एक विशाल किला है, जिसका कोई वर्णन नहीं किया जा सकता। वह अत्यंत ऊँचा है, उसके चारों ओर समुद्र है. सोने के परकोटे (चहारदीवारी) का प्रकाश छिड़ रहा है।

Lord Shiva says – O Uma! There is no exaggeration of the vanar Hanuman in this. This is the glory of the Lord, who even consumes time. Climbing the mountain, he saw Lanka. It is a huge fort, which cannot be described. It is extremely high, surrounded by the sea. The light of the golden ramparts (fortifications) is shining.

विचित्र मणियों से जड़ा हुआ सोने का परकोटा है, उसके भीतर बहुत से सुंदर-सुंदर घर हैं. चौराहे, बाजार, सुंदर मार्ग और गलियाँ हैं, यह सुंदर नगर अनेक प्रकार से सजा हुआ है. हाथी, घोड़े, खच्चरों के समूह तथा पैदल और रथों के समूहों को कौन गिन सकता है! अनेक रूपों के राक्षसों के दल हैं, उनकी अत्यंत बलवती सेना वर्णन करने में कठिनाई होती है.

There is a layer of gold, intertwined with strange gems, inside which are many beautiful houses. There are squares, markets, beautiful streets, and lanes; this beautiful city is decorated in many ways. Who can count the groups of elephants, horses, herds of camels, as well as groups of pedestrians and chariots? There are groups of demons in various forms; it is difficult to describe their extremely powerful army.

वन, बाग, उपवन (बगीचे), फुलवाड़ी, तालाब, कुएँ और बावलियाँ बहुत ही सुंदर हैं। मनुष्य, नाग, देवताओं और गंधर्वों की कन्याएँ अपने सौंदर्य से मुनियों के भी मन को मोहे लेती हैं। कहीं पर्वत के समान विशाल शरीर वाले बड़े ही बलवान (पहलवान) गरज रहे हैं। वे अनेकों अखाड़ों में बहुत प्रकार से भिड़ते और एक-दूसरे को ललकारते हैं।

Forests, gardens, orchards, flower gardens, ponds, wells, and stepwells are very beautiful. Women of humans, nagas, deities, and celestial beings captivate the minds of even the sages with their beauty. Somewhere, mighty wrestlers with gigantic bodies akin to mountains are roaring. They clash in various ways in many arenas and challenge each other.

बलवान शरीर वाले करोड़ों योद्धा मेहनत करके (बड़ी सावधानी से) नगर की चारों दिशाओं में (सभी ओर से) रक्षा करते हैं। कहीं दुष्ट राक्षस भैंसों, मनुष्यों, गायों, गदहों और बकरों को खा रहे हैं। तुलसीदास ने इनकी कथा इसलिए थोड़ी सी कही है कि ये निश्चित ही श्री रामचंद्रजी के बाण रूपी तीर्थ में शरीरों को त्यागकर परमगति पाएँगे।

Millions of warriors with terrifying bodies guard the city in all directions with great care. Somewhere, evil demons are devouring buffaloes, humans, cows, donkeys, and goats. Tulsidas has said a little about them because it is certain that by sacrificing their bodies in the form of arrows of Lord Ramchandra, they will attain the ultimate salvation.

नगर में अनेक संख्यक रखवालों को देखकर हनुमान्‌जी ने विचार किया कि वह अत्यंत छोटे रूप में आकर्षित होकर रात के समय नगर में प्रवेश करें।

After seeing the numerous guards in the city, Hanuman thought to himself that he should take on a very small form and enter the city at night.

हनुमानजी मच्छड़ की भांति छोटे से रूप में धारण करके नर रूप से लीला करने वाले भगवान्‌ श्री रामचंद्रजी का स्मरण करके लंका की ओर चले, जहाँ लंकिनी नाम की एक राक्षसी रहती थी। उसने पूछा, “मुझसे पूछे बिना मेरा अनादर करके वह कहाँ जा रहा है?”

When Hanuman assumed a small form like a mosquito and, in the form of a man, went to perform his divine play, he remembered Lord Shri Ramchandraji and walked towards Lanka, where a demoness named Lankini lived. She asked, “Where is he going without disrespecting me?”

हे मूर्ख! तूने मेरा राज नहीं समझा है। जितने चोर हैं, वे सभी मेरे भोजन हैं। महाकपि हनुमानजी ने उसे एक पंचायत मारी, जिससे वह खून के प्याले पर प्रकट हुआ।

Hey, fool! You do not understand my secret. As many thieves there are, they are all my food. The great monkey Hanuman struck it with a punch, causing it to splatter blood on the ground.

उसने लंकिनी फिर अपने आप को संभाला और डर के कारण हाथ जोड़कर विनती करने लगी। (वह बोली-) जब ब्रह्माजी ने रावण को वर दिया था, तब चलते समय उन्होंने मुझे राक्षसों के विनाश की यह पहचान बता दी थी।

She then composed herself and, out of fear, joined her hands together in supplication. (She said-) When Brahma had granted Ravana a boon, at that time, while leaving, he had informed me of the identification of the destruction of the demons.

जब तू बंदर के मारने से व्याकुल हो जाए, तब तू राक्षसों का संहार हुआ जान लेना। हे तात! मेरे बड़े पुण्य हैं, जो मैं श्री रामचंद्रजी के दूत (आप) को नेत्रों से देख पाई।

When you become agitated by hitting a monkey, then consider the destruction of the demons. Oh Brother! I am blessed to have seen you (the messenger of Shri Ramchandraji) with my own eyes.

हे बड़े भाई! अगर स्वर्ग और मोक्ष के सभी सुखों को एक पलड़े में तराजू में रखा जाए, तो भी उनका यहाँ उस सुख के साथ मिलावट है जो लव (क्षण) मात्र के सत्संग से होता है।

Hey brother! Even if all the joys of heaven and salvation are placed on one side of the scale, they cannot equal the joy that comes from a momentary association with love.

अयोध्यापुरी के राजा श्री रघुनाथजी को मन में रखे हुए नगर में प्रवेश करें और सभी काम कीजिए। इससे उन्हें विष के बजाय अमृत मिलता है, शत्रु मित्र बनना शुरू हो जाता है, समुद्र गाय के पंजे के समान हो जाता है, और अग्नि में शीतलता आ जाती है।

Enter the city of Ayodhyapuri, keeping King Sri Raghunathji in your heart, and accomplish all tasks. This brings them nectar instead of poison, begins to make enemies into friends, becomes as vast as the hoof of a sea cow, and cools down in the fire.

और हे गरुड़जी! सुमेरु पर्वत उसके लिए रज के समान हो जाता है, जिसे श्री रामचंद्रजी ने एक बार कृपा करके देख लिया। तब हनुमान्‌जी ने बहुत ही छोटा रूप धारण किया और भगवान्‌ का स्मरण करके नगर में प्रवेश किया।

And oh Garudji! Mount Sumeru becomes like dust for the one whom Lord Ramachandra once glanced at with compassion. Then Hanumanji assumed a very small form and entered the city while remembering God.

उन्होंने हर एक महल की खोज की। वहाँ-वहाँ असंख्य योद्धा देखे। फिर वे रावण के महल में गए। वह अत्यंत विचित्र था, जिसका वर्णन नहीं हो सकता।

They searched every palace. They saw countless warriors here and there. Then they went to Ravan’s palace. It was extremely strange, indescribable.

हनुमान्‌जी ने उस रावण को शयन किए देखा, परंतु महल में जानकीजी नहीं दिखाई दीं। फिर एक सुंदर महल दिखाई दिया। वहाँ उसमें भगवान्‌ का एक अलग मंदिर बना हुआ था।

Hanumanji saw Ravan lying down, but Sita was not seen in the palace. Then a beautiful palace was seen. There was a separate temple of God built in it.

वह महल श्री रामजी के आयुध (धनुष-बाण) के चिह्नों से अंकित था, उसकी शोभा वर्णन नहीं की जा सकती। वहाँ नवीन-नवीन तुलसी के वृक्ष-समूहों को देखकर कपिराज श्री हनुमान्‌जी हर्षित हुए।

That palace was marked with the symbols of Lord Ram’s weapons (bow and arrow), its splendor cannot be described. Seeing the new groups of Tulsi trees there, King Hanumanji was delighted.

लंका तो राक्षसों के समूह का निवास स्थान है। यहाँ सज्जन (साधु पुरुष) का निवास कहाँ? हनुमानजी मन में इस प्रकार तर्क करने लगे। उसी समय विभीषणजी जागे।

Lanka is the dwelling place of the group of demons. Where is the residence of the righteous here? Hanumanji began to argue in his mind in this way. At that very moment, Vibhishan woke up.

(बिभीषण के बारे मे) उन्होंने राम नाम का स्मरण किया। हनुमानजी ने उन्हें सज्जन जाना और हृदय में हर्षित हुए। हनुमानजी ने विचार किया कि इनसे हठ करके परिचय करूँगा, क्योंकि साधु से कार्य की हानि नहीं होती।

He remembered the name of Ram. Hanumanji recognized him and was delighted in his heart. Hanumanji thought that he would introduce himself to them forcefully because there was no harm in working with a saint. There is only one benefit.

ब्राह्मण का रूप धरकर हनुमानजी ने उन्हें वचन सुनाए। सुनते ही विभीषणजी उठकर वहाँ आए। प्रणाम करके कुशल पूछी और कहा हे ब्राह्मणदेव! अपनी कथा समझाकर कहिए।

Wearing the guise of a Brahmin, Hanumanji spoke to them. As soon as they heard, Vibhishan got up and came there. After greeting him, he asked how he was and said, ‘O Brahmin god! Explain your story.

क्या आप हनुमानजी के भक्त हैं? क्योंकि आपको देखकर मेरे मन में अत्यंत प्रेम उमड़ रहा है। या फिर क्या आप दीन दुखी लोगों का सहारा बनाने वाले स्वयं हनुमानजी ही हैं जो मुझे सफल बनाने के लिए आए हैं?

Are you a devotee of Lord Hanuman? Because upon seeing you, there is immense love arising in my heart. Or perhaps you are Lord Hanuman himself, who has come to make me successful by supporting the poor and distressed?

तब हनुमानजी ने भगवान रामचंद्रजी की सम्पूर्ण कहानी सुनाई और अपना नाम बताया। सुनते ही दोनों के शरीर में पुलकित हो गए और वे दोनों श्री रामजी के गुण स्मरण करते हुए प्रेम और आनंद में मग्न हो गए।

Then Hanumanji narrated the entire story of Lord Ramachandra, and upon hearing it, both of them felt a thrill in their bodies and became absorbed in love and joy, remembering the qualities of Lord Rama.

विभीषणजी ने कहा- हे पवनपुत्र! मेरी रहनी सुनो। मैं यहाँ वैसे ही रहता हूँ जैसे दाँतों के बीच में बेचारी जीभ। हे तात! मुझे अनाथ जानकर सूर्यकुल के नाथ श्री रामचंद्रजी क्या कभी मुझ पर कृपा करेंगे?

Vibhishan said – Hey Pawanputra! Listen to my plea. I live here like the poor tongue between teeth. O Lord! Will Sri Ramchandraji, the master of the Solar dynasty, ever show mercy on me?

मेरे तामसी (राक्षस) शरीर होने से साधन तो कुछ बनता नहीं और न मन में श्री रामचंद्रजी के चरणकमलों में प्रेम ही है, परंतु हे हनुमान! अब मुझे विश्वास हो गया कि श्री रामजी की मुझ पर कृपा है, क्योंकि हरि की कृपा के बिना संत नहीं मिलते।

Despite having a demonic body, nothing is achieved by effort, and love for Sri Ramchandraji’s lotus feet is in the heart. But Hanuman! Now I have faith that there is the grace of Shri Ramji on me because, without the grace of Hari, saints are not found.

जब श्री रघुवीर ने कृपा की है, तभी तो आपने मुझे हठ करके (अपनी ओर से) दर्शन दिए हैं। हे विभीषणजी! सुनिए, प्रभु की यही रीति है कि वे सेवक पर सदा ही प्रेम किया करते हैं।

When Shri Raghuvir showed grace, only then did you grant me a vision (from your side) stubbornly. (Hanumanji said-) Hey Vibhishanji! Listen, this is the way of the Lord that He always loves His servants.

भला कहिए, मैं ही कौन बड़ा कुलीन हूँ? (जाति का) चंचल वानर हूँ और सब प्रकार से नीच हूँ, प्रातःकाल जो हम लोगों (बंदरों) का नाम ले ले तो उस दिन उसे भोजन न मिले।

Tell me, who am I to be noble? I am a restless monkey (of caste) and low in every way. If we (monkeys) mention someone’s name in the morning, then that day they don’t get food.

हे सखा! सुनिए, मैं ऐसा अधम हूँ, पर श्री रामचंद्रजी ने तो मुझ पर भी कृपा ही की है। भगवान्‌ के गुणों का स्मरण करके हनुमानजी के दोनों नेत्रों में (प्रेमाश्रुओं का) जल भर आया।

Hey friend! Listen, I am such a wretched person, but even Sri Ramchandraji has shown mercy on me. Remembering the qualities of God, tears of love filled both of Hanumanji’s eyes.

जो जानते हुए भी ऐसे स्वामी (श्री रघुनाथजी) को भुलाकर (विषयों के पीछे) भटकते फिरते हैं, वे दुःखी क्यों न हों? इस प्रकार श्री रामजी के गुण समूहों को कहते हुए उन्होंने अनिर्वचनीय (परम) शांति प्राप्त की।

Those who, knowing it, wander away forgetting such a master (Shri Raghunathji) behind (worldly matters), why would they not be unhappy? In this way, describing the qualities of Shri Ramji, he attained incomprehensible (supreme) peace.

फिर विभीषणजी ने, श्री जानकीजी जिस प्रकार वहाँ (लंका में) रहती थीं, वह सब कथा कही। तब हनुमान्‌जी ने कहा- हे भाई सुनो, मैं जानकी माता को देखता चाहता हूँ।

Then Vibhishanji narrated the story of how Sita Mata used to live there (in Lanka). Then Hanumanji said- Hey brother listen, I want to see Mother Janaki.

विभीषणजी ने (माता के दर्शन की) सब युक्तियाँ (उपाय) कह सुनाईं। तब हनुमान्‌जी विदा लेकर चले। फिर वही (पहले का मसक सरीखा) रूप धरकर वहाँ गए, जहाँ अशोक वन में (वन के जिस भाग में) सीताजी रहती थीं।

Vibhishanji explained all the strategies (ways) to (see Mother). Then Hanumanji took leave and left. Then he went there (in the disguise of a masquerade) where Sita Ji used to live in Ashok Vatika (the part of the forest).

सीताजी को देखकर हनुमान्‌जी ने उन्हें मन ही में प्रणाम किया। उन्हें बैठे ही बैठे रात्रि के चारों पहर बीत जाते हैं। शरीर दुबला हो गया है, सिर पर जटाओं की एक वेणी (लट) है। हृदय में श्री रघुनाथजी के गुण समूहों का जाप (स्मरण) करती रहती हैं।

Hanumanji bowed to Sita Ji in his mind upon seeing her. Sitting there, the four-quarters of the night passed. The body has become thin, there is a single braid of hair on the head. She keeps reciting the qualities of Shri Raghunathji in her heart.

श्री जानकीजी नेत्रों को अपने चरणों में लगाए हुए हैं (नीचे की ओर देख रही हैं) और मन श्री रामजी के चरण कमलों में लीन है। जानकीजी को दीन (दुःखी) देखकर पवनपुत्र हनुमानजी बहुत ही दुःखी हुए।

Sita Ji has her eyes fixed on her feet (looking down) and her mind is absorbed in the lotus feet of Sri Ramji. Seeing Sita Ji sad (distressed), Hanumanji became very sad.

हनुमान्‌जी वृक्ष के पत्तों में छिप रहे और विचार करने लगे कि हे भाई! क्या करूँ (इनका दुःख कैसे दूर करूँ)? उसी समय बहुत सी स्त्रियों को साथ लिए सज-धजकर रावण वहाँ आया

Hanumanji hid in the leaves of the tree and started thinking, “Hey brother! What should I do (how do I remove their sorrow)?” At that time, Ravana came there with many women, all dressed up.

उस दुष्ट ने सीताजी को बहुत प्रकार से समझाया। साम, दान, भय और भेद दिखलाया। रावण ने कहा- हे सुमुखि! हे सयानी! सुनो! मंदोदरी आदि सब रानियों को।

That evil one tried to persuade Sita Ji in many ways. He showed wealth, charity, fear, and division. Ravana said – Hey beautiful one! Hey intelligent one! Listen! Mandodari and all the other queens.

मैं तुम्हें अपनी दासी बनाऊँगा, यह मेरा प्रण है। तुम मेरी ओर एक बार देखो, सही! अपने प्रिय सहभागी कोसलाधीश श्री रामचंद्रजी का स्मरण करके जानकीजी तिनके की आड़ (परदा) करके कहने लगीं।

I will make you my servant, this is my vow. Look towards me once, alright! By remembering her beloved partner, Lord Ramachandra, Sita began to speak, removing the veil of the straw.

हे दशमुख! सुन, क्या कभी कमलिनी के प्रकाश से जुगनू खिल सकती है? जानकीजी फिर कहती हैं- तू (अपने लिए भी) ऐसा ही मन में समझ ले। रे दुष्ट! तुझे श्री रघुवीर के बाण की खबर नहीं है। रे पापी! तू मुझे सोने में हर लाया है। रे अधम! निर्लज्ज! तुझे लज्जा नहीं आती।

Hey Dashamukh! Listen, can a lotus bud bloom with the light of a firefly? Sita then says, “Consider this in your mind as well. O wicked one! You do not know about the arrows of Lord Raghuvir.” O sinner! You have brought me every sorrow. O wicked one! Shameless! Aren’t you ashamed?

अपने को जुगनू के समान और रामचंद्रजी को सूर्य के समान सुनकर और सीताजी के कठोर वचनों को सुनकर रावण तलवार निकालकर बड़े गुस्से में आकर बोला।

Considering himself as bright as a firefly and Lord Ramachandra as radiant as the sun, and hearing Sita’s harsh words, Ravana, in great anger, drew his sword and spoke.

सीता! तूने मेरा अपनाम किया है। मैं तेरा सिर इस कठोर कृपाण से काट डालूँगा। नहीं तो (अब भी) जल्दी मेरी बात मान ले। हे सुमुखि! नहीं तो जीवन से हाथ धोना पड़ेगा।

Sita! You have insulted me. I will cut off your head with this sharp sword. Otherwise, you should quickly accept my words. Hey charming one! Otherwise, you will have to wash your hands of life.

सीताजी ने कहा- हे दशग्रीव! प्रभु की भुजा जो श्याम कमल की माला के समान सुंदर और हाथी की सूँड के समान (पुष्ट तथा विशाल) है, या तो वह भुजा ही मेरे कंठ में पड़ेगी या तेरी भयानक तलवार ही। रे शठ! सुन, यही मेरा सच्चा प्रण है।

Seeta Ji said – O Dashagriva! The arm of the Lord, which is as beautiful as a dark lotus garland and as strong and large as an elephant’s tusk, will either be on my shoulder or your dreadful sword. O deceitful one! Listen, this is my true pledge.

सीताजी कहती हैं- हे चंद्रहास (तलवार)! श्री रघुनाथजी के विरह की अग्नि से उत्पन्न मेरी बड़ी भारी जलन को तू हर ले, हे तलवार! तू शीतल, तीव्र और श्रेष्ठ धारा बहाती है (अर्थात्‌ तेरी धारा ठंडी और तेज है), तू मेरे दुःख के बोझ को हर ले।

Seeta Ji says – O Chandrahas (sword)! You, who emanate from the fire of separation of Shri Raghunathji, take away my intense burning caused by the fire, O sword! You have a cool, sharp, and superior flow (meaning, your flow is cool and fast), take away the burden of my sorrow.

सीताजी के ये वचन सुनते ही वह मारने दौड़ा। तब मय दानव की पुत्री मन्दोदरी ने नीति कहकर उसे समझाया। तब रावण ने सब दासियों को बुलाकर कहा कि जाकर सीता को बहुत प्रकार से भय दिखलाओ। यदि महीने भर में यह कहा न माने तो मैं इसे तलवार निकालकर मार डालूँगा।

Upon hearing these words of Seeta Ji, he ran to kill. Then, the daughter of the demon, Mandodari, explained to him with wisdom. Then Ravana called all the maidens and ordered them to show various kinds of fear to Seeta. If it does not listen to me within a month, then I will take out my sword and kill it.

(यों कहकर) रावण घर चला गया। यहाँ राक्षसियों के समूह बहुत से बुरे रूप धरकर सीताजी को भय दिखलाने लगे।

(Saying this) Ravana went home. Here, a group of demons, taking on many evil forms, began to show fear to Seeta.

उनमें एक त्रिजटा नाम की राक्षसी थी। उसकी श्री रामचंद्रजी के चरणों में प्रीति थी और वह विवेक (ज्ञान) में निपुण थी। उसने सबों को बुलाकर अपना स्वप्न सुनाया और कहा- सीताजी की सेवा करके अपना कल्याण कर लो।

Among them was a demoness named Trijata. She had affection for the feet of Shri Ramachandraji and was skilled in wisdom. She called everyone and narrated her dream, saying – by serving Seeta Ji, achieve your salvation.

स्वप्न (मैंने देखा कि) एक बंदर ने लंका जला दी। राक्षसों की सारी सेना मार डाली गई। रावण नंगा है और गदहे पर सवार है। उसके सिर मुँडे हुए हैं, बीसों भुजाएँ कटी हुई हैं।

I dreamt that a monkey set Lanka on fire. The entire army of demons was killed. Ravana is naked and riding on a donkey. His head is shaved, and twenty arms are cut off.

इस प्रकार से वह दक्षिण (यमपुरी की) दिशा को जा रहा है और मानो लंका विभीषण ने पाई है। नगर में श्री रामचंद्रजी की दुहाई फिर गई। तब प्रभु ने सीताजी को बुला भेजा।

In this way, he is going towards the south (direction of Yamapuri) as if Lanka has been found. The chant of Shri Ramachandraji’s name echoed in the city again. Then the Lord sent for Seeta Ji.

मैं पुकारकर (निश्चय के साथ) कहती हूँ कि यह स्वप्न चार (कुछ ही) दिनों बाद सत्य होकर रहेगा। उसके वचन सुनकर वे सब राक्षसियाँ डर गईं और जानकीजी के चरणों पर गिर पड़ीं।

I shout (with certainty) and say that this dream will come true in four (very few) days. Hearing his words, all the demons were afraid and fell at the feet of Janaki Ji.

तब (इसके बाद) वे सब जहाँ-तहाँ चली गईं। सीताजी मन में सोच करने लगीं कि एक महीना बीत जाने पर नीच राक्षस रावण मुझे मारेगा।

Then (after this) they all went here and there. Seeta Ji started thinking in her mind that if one month passed, the vile demon Ravana would kill me.

सीताजी हाथ जोड़कर त्रिजटा से बोलीं- हे माता! तू मेरी विपत्ति की संगिनी है। जल्दी कोई ऐसा उपाय कर जिससे मैं शरीर छोड़ सकूँ। विरह असह्म हो चला है, अब यह सहा नहीं जाता।

Seeta Ji joined her hands and said to Trijata – O mother! You are the companion of my calamity. Find a solution quickly so that I can leave this body. The separation has become unbearable, it cannot be endured anymore.

काष्ठ लेकर चिता बनाकर सजा दें। हे माता! फिर उसमें आग लगा दें। हे बुद्धिमान! तू मेरी प्रेम को सत्य कर दें। रावण की त्रिशूल के समान दुःख देने वाली वाणी कानों से कौन सुने?

“Bring wood and make a pyre. O mother! Then set fire to it. O wise one! Prove my love to be true. Who would listen to words that cause pain like Ravana’s trident?”

सीताजी के शब्दों को सुनकर त्रिजटा ने चरण पकड़कर उन्हें समझाने का प्रयास किया और प्रभु की महिमा, शक्ति और सफलता की कहानी सुनाई। (उसने कहा-) हे सुन्दरी! ध्यान दो, रात के समय आग नहीं मिलेगी। इसी वजह से वह अपने घर की ओर बढ़ चली।

Trijata, upon hearing Sita’s words, tried to explain them and narrated the glory, power, and success of the Lord. (She said-) Hey, beautiful one! Listen, fire will not be found at night. Saying this, she went back home.

सीताजी (मन ही मन) सोचने लगीं- (क्या करूँ) भगवान ही विपरीत हो गए हैं। न आग मिलेगी, न पीड़ा मिटेगी। आकाश में अंगारे प्रकट हो रहे हैं, पर पृथ्वी पर एक भी तारा नहीं दिखाई देता।

Sita (in her mind) started saying – (what should I do) the Creator has turned the opposite. There will be no fire, no pain will be relieved. Embers are visible in the sky, but not a single star appears on the earth.

चंद्रमा जल है, पर वह भी ऐसा लग रहा है कि मुझे हतभागी जानकर आग नहीं बरसा रहा है। हे अशोक वृक्ष! मेरी पुकार सुनो। मेरा दुख हर लो और अपने (अशोक) नाम को सत्य मानो।

The moon is like fire, but it seems as if it is not raining fire knowing my unfortunate condition. Hey Ashoka tree! Listen to my plea. Relieve my sorrow and uphold your (Ashoka’s) name.

तेरे नए-नए कोमल पत्ते अग्नि के समान हैं। अग्नि मत दे, विरह रोग का अंत मत कर (अर्थात्‌ विरह रोग को बढ़ाकर सीमा तक न पहुँचा) सीताजी को विरह से परम व्याकुल देखकर वह क्षण हनुमानजी के समान बीता।

Your new tender leaves are like fire. Don’t give fire, don’t end the disease of separation (meaning, don’t exacerbate the disease of separation and not reach the limit) Seeing Sita extremely agitated by separation, that moment Hanumanji passed like a moment of imagination.

तब हनुमानजी ने अपने मन में सोच कर (सीताजी के सामने) अँगूठी पहना दी, जैसे कि अशोक ने अंगारे दे दिए हों। (यह समझकर) सीताजी ने खुशी से भरकर उठकर उसे हाथ में ले लिया।

Then Hanumanji, thinking in his heart (in front of Sita), put a ring on his finger, as if Ashoka had given embers. (Understanding this) Sita, filled with joy, got up and took it in her hand.

तब उन्होंने राम-नाम से अंकित अत्यंत सुंदर एवं मनोहर अँगूठी देखी। अँगूठी को पहचानकर सीताजी आश्चर्यचकित होकर उसे देखने लगीं और हर्ष तथा विषाद से हृदय में अकुला उठीं।

Then Hanumanji, thinking in his heart (in front of SitaThen Hanumanji thought and placed the ring in his heart (in front of Sita), as if Ashok had given fire. (Understanding this) Sita, delighted, got up and took it in her hand.), put a ring on his finger, as if Ashoka had given embers. (Understanding this) Sita, filled with joy, got up and took it in her hand.

वे विचार करने लगीं श्री रघुनाथजी की पूरी तरह अजेय हैं, उन्हें कौन हरा सकता है? और माया से ऐसी दिव्य, चिन्मय अँगूठी बनाई नहीं जा सकती। सीताजी मन में अनेक प्रकार के विचार कर रही थीं। इसी समय हनुमानजी मधुर भाषण कह रहे थे।

She began to think that Shri Raghunathji is completely invincible, who can defeat him? And such a divine, consciousness ring cannot be made from the elements of illusion. Sita was thinking of many thoughts in her mind. At this time, Hanumanji was speaking sweet words.

उन्होंने श्री रामचंद्रजी के गुणों का वर्णन करना शुरू किया, (जिनके) सुनते ही सीताजी का दुःख दूर हो गया। वे कान और मन लगाकर उन्हें सुनने लगीं। हनुमान्‌जी ने आदि से लेकर अब तक की सारी कथा कह सुनाई।

They began describing the virtues of Shri Ramachandraji, upon hearing that Sita’s sorrow vanished. She listened attentively. Hanumanji narrated the entire story from the beginning until now.

(सीताजी ने कहा-) जिसने कानों के लिए अमृत रूप यह सुंदर कथा कही, वह हे भाई! प्रकट क्यों नहीं होता? तब हनुमान्‌जी पास चले गए। उन्हें देखकर सीताजी फिरकर (मुख फेरकर) बैठ गईं। उनके मन में आश्चर्य हुआ।

(Sita said-) The one who narrated this beautiful story like nectar for the ears, why doesn’t he appear? Then Hanumanji went near. Seeing him, Sita turned her face and sat down. She was amazed.

(हनुमानजी ने कहा-) हे माता जानकी मैं श्री रामजी का दूत हूँ। करुणानिधान की सच्ची शपथ करता हूँ, हे माता! यह अँगूठी मैं ही लाया हूँ। श्री रामजी ने मुझे आपके लिए यह सहिदानी (निशानी या पहिचान) दी है।

(सीताजी ने पूछा-) नर और वानर का संग कहो कैसे हुआ? तब हनुमानजी ने जैसे संग हुआ था, वह सब कथा कही।

(Hanumanji said-) O Mother Janaki, I am the messenger of Shri Ramji. I swear by the ocean of compassion, O Mother! I have bought this ring. Shri Ramji has given me this identification for you.

(Sita asked-) Tell me, how did the union of man and monkey happen? Then Hanumanji narrated the whole story of how the union happened.

हनुमान्‌जी के प्रेमयुक्त वचन सुनकर सीताजी के मन में विश्वास उत्पन्न हो गया, उन्होंने जान लिया कि यह मन, वचन और कर्म से कृपासागर श्री रघुनाथजी का दास है।

Listening to Hanumanji’s words filled with love, Sita’s faith was established. She realized that her mind, words, and actions were devoted to Shri Raghunathji, the ocean of compassion.

भगवान का जन (सेवक) जानकर अत्यंत गाढ़ी प्रीति हो गई। नेत्रों में (प्रेमाश्रुओं का) जल भर आया और शरीर अत्यंत पुलकित हो गया। (सीताजी ने कहा-) हे तात हनुमान्‌! विरहसागर में डूबती हुई मुझको तुम जहाज हुए।

Upon knowing the servant of God, there arose an extremely deep love. Tears of love filled the eyes and the body trembled intensely. (Sita said-) O revered Hanuman! You became the boat for me drowning in the ocean of separation.

मैं बलिहारी जाती हूँ, अब छोटे भाई लक्ष्मणजी सहित खर के शत्रु सुखधाम प्रभु का कुशल-मंगल कहो। श्री रघुनाथजी तो कोमल हृदय और कृपालु हैं। फिर हे हनुमान्‌! उन्होंने किस कारण यह निष्ठुरता धारण कर ली है?

I am devoted, and now wish well-being to Lord Ram along with younger brother Lakshman and enemies of Khara in Sukhdham. Shri Raghunathji is tender-hearted and merciful. Then, O Hanuman! For what reason has he adopted this cruelty?

सेवक को सुख देना उनकी स्वाभाविक बान है। वे श्री रघुनाथजी क्या कभी मेरी भी याद करते हैं? हे तात! क्या कभी उनके कोमल साँवले अंगों को देखकर मेरे नेत्र शीतल होंगे?

It is natural for them to give happiness to their servant. Do Shri Raghunathji ever think of me too? O revered one! Will my eyes be soothed by seeing their tender, dark limbs?

(मुँह से) वचन नहीं निकलता, नेत्रों में (विरह के आँसुओं का) जल भर आया। (बड़े दुःख से वे बोलीं-) हा नाथ! आपने मुझे बिलकुल ही भुला दिया! सीताजी को विरह से परम व्याकुल देखकर हनुमानजी कोमल और विनीत वचन बोले।

(Unable to speak) Words did not come out, tears of separation filled the eyes. (With great sorrow, she said-) Oh Lord! You have completely forgotten me! Seeing Sita extremely distressed by separation, Hanumanji spoke softly and humbly.

हे माता! सुंदर कृपा के धाम प्रभु भाई लक्ष्मणजी के सहित (शरीर से) कुशल हैं, परंतु आपके दुःख से दुःखी हैं। हे माता! मन में ग्लानि न मानिए (मन छोटा करके दुःख न कीजिए)। श्री रामचंद्रजी के हृदय में आपसे दूना प्रेम है।

O Mother! The abode of beautiful grace, Lord Ram along with brother Lakshman is well, but they are saddened by your sorrow. O Mother! Do not feel disheartened (do not diminish your heart and cause sorrow). There is double love for you in Shri Ramachandraji’s heart.

हे माता! अब धीरज धरकर श्री रघुनाथजी का संदेश सुनिए। ऐसा कहकर हनुमान्‌जी प्रेम से गद्गद हो गए। उनके नेत्रों में (प्रेमाश्रुओं का) जल भर आया।

O Mother! Now, with patience, listen to the message of Shri Raghunathji. Saying this, Hanumanji became emotional with love. Tears of love filled his eyes.

(हनुमान जी बोले-) श्री रामचंद्रजी ने कहा है कि हे सीते! तुम्हारे वियोग में मेरे लिए सभी पदार्थ प्रतिकूल हो गए हैं। वृक्षों के नए-नए कोमल पत्ते मानो अग्नि के समान, रात्रि कालरात्रि के समान, चंद्रमा सूर्य के समान।

(Hanuman said-) Shri Ramachandraji has said that, O Sita! In your separation, all things have become adverse for me. The new tender leaves of trees are like fire, the night is like the dark night of the new moon, and the moon is like the sun.

और कमलों के वन भालों के वन के समान हो गए हैं। मेघ मानो खौलता हुआ तेल बरसाते हैं। जो हित करने वाले थे, वे ही अब पीड़ा देने लगे हैं। त्रिविध (शीतल, मंद, सुगंध) वायु साँप के श्वास के समान (जहरीली और गरम) हो गई है।

And the forests of lotuses have become like forests of thorns. The clouds seem to rain boiling oil. Those who were beneficial have now started causing pain. The three types (cool, mild, fragrant) of air have become like the breath of a snake (venomous and hot).

मन का दुःख कह डालने से भी कुछ घट जाता है। पर कहूँ किससे? यह दुःख कोई जानता नहीं। हे प्रिये! मेरे और तेरे प्रेम का तत्त्व (रहस्य) एक मेरा मन ही जानता है।

Even by expressing the sorrow of the mind, some of it diminishes. But to whom should I tell? This sorrow is unknown to anyone. O beloved! Only my mind knows the essence (secret) of my and your love.

और वह मन सदा तेरे ही पास रहता है। बस, मेरे प्रेम का सार इतने में ही समझ ले। प्रभु का संदेश सुनते ही जानकीजी प्रेम में मग्न हो गईं। उन्हें शरीर की सुध न रही।

And that mind always remains with you. Just understand the essence of my love in this much. Upon hearing the message of the Lord, Janakiji became absorbed in love. She had no awareness of her body.

हनुमानजी ने कहा- हे माता! हृदय में धैर्य धारण करो और सेवकों को सुख देने वाले श्री रामजी का स्मरण करो। श्री रघुनाथजी की प्रभुता को हृदय में लाओ और मेरे वचन सुनकर कायरता छोड़ दो।

Hanumanji said- O Mother! Keep patience in your heart and remember Lord Ramji, who gives happiness to his servants. Bring the Lordship of Shri Raghunathji into your heart and abandon cowardice by listening to my words.

राक्षसों के समूह पतंगों के समान और श्री रघुनाथजी के बाण अग्नि के समान हैं। हे माता! हृदय में स्थिरता बनाए रखें और राक्षसों को जला दें।

The groups of demons are like groups of moths, and Shri Raghunathji’s arrows are like fire. O Mother! Maintain patience in your heart and consider burning the demons.

यदि श्री रामचंद्रजी को खबर मिली होती, तो वे विलम्ब नहीं करते। हे जानकीजी! सूर्य के उदय होने पर राक्षसों की सेना रूपी अंधकार कहाँ रह सकती है?

If Shri Ramchandraji had known, he would not have delayed. O Janakiji! Where can the army of demons stay when the sun rises like the Ram Baan?

हे माता! मैं इस स्थान से अब लीवा जाऊँ, लेकिन श्री रामचंद्रजी की शपथ है, मुझे उनकी आज्ञा नहीं है। हे माता! कुछ और दिनों तक धीरज रखें। श्री रामचंद्रजी वानरों के साथ यहाँ आएंगे।

Oh, mother! I will leave from here now, but I swear by Shri Ramchandraji, I do not have his command. So, mother! Have patience for a few more days. Shri Ramchandraji will come here with the monkeys.

और राक्षसों को मारकर आपको ले जाएँगे। नारद आदि (ऋषि-मुनि) तीनों लोकों में उनका यश गाएँगे। (सीताजी ने कहा-) हे पुत्र! सब वानर तुम्हारे ही समान (नन्हें-नन्हें से) होंगे, राक्षस तो बड़े बलवान, योद्धा हैं।

And after killing the demons, they will take you away. Narad and other sages will sing their praises in all three worlds. (Sita said-) Oh son! All the monkeys will be like you (small and tiny), the demons are big and strong warriors.

अतः मेरे हृदय में बड़ा भारी संदेह होता है (कि तुम जैसे बंदर राक्षसों को कैसे जीतेंगे!)। यह सुनकर हनुमान्‌जी ने अपना शरीर प्रकट किया। सोने के पर्वत (सुमेरु) के आकार का (अत्यंत विशाल) शरीर था, जो युद्ध में शत्रुओं के हृदय में भय उत्पन्न करने वाला, अत्यंत बलवान्‌ और वीर था।

तब (उसे देखकर) सीताजी के मन में विश्वास हुआ। हनुमान्‌जी ने फिर छोटा रूप धारण कर लिया।

So, I have a great doubt in my heart (how will creatures like you defeat the demons!). Hearing this, Hanumanji revealed his body. He had a body the size of Mount Sumeru, which was extremely large, terrifying the hearts of enemies in battle, extremely powerful, and brave.

Then (seeing him), Sita’s faith was restored. Hanumanji then assumed a small form.

हे माता! सुनो, वानरों में बहुत बल-बुद्धि नहीं होती, परंतु प्रभु के प्रताप से बहुत छोटा सर्प भी गरुड़ को खा सकता है। (अत्यंत निर्बल भी महान्‌ बलवान्‌ को मार सकता है)।

Oh mother! Listen, monkeys are not very strong or intelligent, but with the grace of God, even a very small snake can eat Garuda. (The extremely weak can also defeat the extremely strong)

भक्ति, प्रताप, तेज और शक्ति से संपन्न हनुमानजी की वाणी सुनकर सीताजी के मन में संतोष हुआ। उन्होंने श्री रामजी के प्रिय जानकर हनुमानजी को आशीर्वाद दिया, कहा “हे बल के स्रोत! तुम सदा बल और धर्म के प्रतीक रहो।

Listening to the words full of devotion, glory, power, and strength, Sita felt content in her heart. She blessed Hanuman, saying, “O son! May you always be the embodiment of strength and virtue.”

भक्ति, प्रताप, तेज और शक्ति से संपन्न हनुमानजी की वाणी सुनकर सीताजी के मन में संतोष हुआ। उन्होंने श्री रामजी के प्रिय जानकर हनुमानजी को आशीर्वाद दिया, कहा “हे बल के स्रोत! तुम सदा बल और धर्म के प्रतीक रहो।

Listening to the words full of devotion, glory, power, and strength, Sita felt content in her heart. She blessed Hanuman, saying, “O son! May you always be the embodiment of strength and virtue.”

हे पुत्र! तुम अजर, अमर और गुणों के भंडार हो। श्री रघुनाथजी तुम पर बहुत कृपा करें। ‘प्रभु कृपा करें’ ऐसा सुनते ही हनुमान्‌जी पूर्ण प्रेम में मग्न हो गए।

Hey son! You are immortal, eternal, and a treasure trove of virtues. May Lord Raghunath shower his blessings upon you. Upon hearing “may the Lord bless you,” Hanuman became completely engrossed in love.

हनुमान्‌जी ने बार-बार सीताजी के पादों में शीर्ष नवाया और फिर हाथ जोड़कर कहा- हे माता! अब मैं कृतार्थ हो गया। आपका आशीर्वाद अमोघ है, यह बात प्रसिद्ध है।

Hanumanji repeatedly bowed his head at Sita Ji’s feet and then joined his hands and said, “Mother! Now I am fulfilled. Your blessing is infallible, this fact is well known.”

हे माता! आपसे कहना चाहता हूं कि सुंदर फल वाले पेड़ों को देखकर मुझे बड़ी ही भूख लग रही है। (सीताजी ने कहा-) हे बेटा! सुनो, इस वन में बड़े भारी योद्धा राक्षसों का पालन-पोषण होता है।

(हनुमानजी ने कहा-) हे माता! अगर आप मन में सुख मानें (प्रसन्न होकर) आज्ञा दें तो मुझे उनका भय तो बिलकुल नहीं है।

Mother! I want to tell you that looking at the beautiful fruit trees, I am feeling very hungry. (Sita Ji said-) Son, listen, this forest is inhabited by very heavy warriors, the demons.

(Hanuman Ji said-) Mother! If you are pleased in your heart and give me permission, then I have absolutely no fear of them.

हनुमानजी को बुद्धि और बल में निपुण देखकर जानकीजी ने कहा- जाओ। हे तात! श्री रघुनाथजी के चरणों को हृदय में धारण करके मीठे फल खाओ।

Seeing Hanumanji proficient in intellect and strength, Janakiji said, “Go. O respected one! With Lord Raghunathji’s feet in your heart, eat the sweet fruits.

उन्होंने सीताजी के आगे सिर झुकाया और बाग में प्रवेश किया। फल खाया और पेड़ों को तोड़ने लगे। वहाँ बहुत से योद्धाओं के रक्षक थे। कुछ को मार गिराया और कुछ ने रावण से मदद मांगने के लिए पुकारा।

They bowed their heads to Sita and entered the garden. They ate the fruit and started breaking the trees. Many warriors were guarding there. They killed some and some went to call for help from Ravana.

और कहा- “हे भगवान! एक बहुत भारी बंदर आया है। उसने अशोक वाटिका नष्ट कर दी। फल खाये, पेड़ों को उखाड़ डाला और बगीचे के कामगारों को मसल-मसल कर जमीन पर गिरा दिया।”

And he said, “O Lord! A very heavy monkey has come. He destroyed the Ashok garden. Ate the fruits, uprooted the trees, and crushed the gardeners and threw them on the ground.”

रावण ने यह सुनकर बहुत से योद्धा भेजे। उन्हें देखकर हनुमानजी ने गर्जना की। हनुमानजी ने सभी राक्षसों को मार डाला, कुछ जो अधमरे थे, चिल्लाते हुए भाग गए।

Upon hearing this, Ravana sent many warriors. Seeing them, Hanuman roared. Hanuman killed all the demons, some of whom were cowardly, screaming as they fled.

फिर रावण ने अक्षयकुमार को भेजा। वह अनगिनत उत्कृष्ट योद्धाओं को साथ लेकर आगे बढ़ा। हनुमानजी ने उसे आते देखकर एक पेड़ (हाथ में) उठाया और उसे मारकर महाध्वनि (बड़े जोर) से गर्जना की।

Then Ravana sent Akshayakumar. He advanced with countless excellent warriors. Seeing him coming, Hanuman took up a tree (in his hand) and hitting him, roared.

हनुमानजी ने सेना में से कुछ को मार डाला और कुछ को मसल डाला और कुछ को पकड़-पकड़कर धूल में मिला दिया। कुछ ने फिर जाकर पुकार की कि हे प्रभु! बंदर बहुत ही बलवान्‌ है।

Hanuman killed some of the army, crushed some, and grabbed some, mixing them in the dust. Some then cried out, saying, “O Lord! The monkey is very strong.”

रावण ने अपने पुत्र के वध की खबर सुनते ही क्रोध से भरकर (अपने जेठ के पुत्र) मेघनाद को भेज दिया। (उससे कहा कि-) हे पुत्र! उसे मारना नहीं, उसे बंधक बनाकर लाओ। देख लो कि वह बंदर कहाँ का है।

Upon hearing the news of his son’s death, Ravana, filled with anger, sent his powerful son Meghnad. (He told him,) “Son! Don’t kill him, bring him as a captive. Find out where he belongs.”

इंद्र को पराजित करने वाले अतुलनीय योद्धा मेघनाद निकले। भाई की मृत्यु की खबर सुनकर उसे क्रोध आया। हनुमान ने देखा कि अब एक भयंकर योद्धा आया है। तब उन्होंने भयंकर रूप से गर्जना की और उड़ गए।

Meghanad, the unparalleled warrior who defeated Indra, marched forward. Hearing the news of his brother’s death, he became enraged. Hanuman saw that a fearsome warrior had arrived. Then, he roared thunderously and leaped forward.

उन्होंने एक विशालकाय वृक्ष को उखाड़ लिया और लंकेश्वर रावण के पुत्र मेघनाद को रथ से उतार दिया, और उसके साथ उन बड़े-बड़े योद्धाओं को हनुमानजी ने अपने शरीर से मसलकर मार डाला।

They uprooted a very large tree and brought down Ravana’s son Meghnad from his chariot. Hanumanji crushed the great warriors who were with him with his body.

उन सभी को मारकर फिर मेघनाद से लड़ने लगे। (लड़ते हुए वे ऐसे दिखते थे) मानो दो गजराज (श्रेष्ठ हाथी) भिड़ गए हों। हनुमान्‌जी उसे एक घूँसा मारकर वृक्ष पर जा चढ़े। उसको क्षणभर के लिए मूर्च्छा आ गई।

फिर खड़े होकर उसने बहुत सारी विलासिता बिखेरी, परंतु पवन के पुत्र उससे पराजित नहीं होते।

After defeating them all, they began to fight with Meghnad. (While fighting, they appeared to be) as if two great elephants were clashing. Hanuman hit him with a fist and climbed up a tree. He fell unconscious for a moment.

“Then standing up, he spread a lot of luxury, but the sons of the wind could not be defeated by it.”

आख़िर में उसने ब्रह्मास्त्र का अनुसंधान किया, तब हनुमानजी ने मन में विचार किया कि यदि ब्रह्मास्त्र को अस्वीकार करता हूँ तो उसकी अपार महिमा मिट जाएगी।

“In the end, he performed the Brahmastra’s experiment, then Hanumanji thought in his mind that if he did not accept the Brahmastra, its immense glory would be erased.”

उसने हनुमानजी पर ब्रह्मास्त्र चलाया, (जिससे वे वृक्ष से नीचे गिर पड़े), परंतु गिरते समय भी उन्होंने बहुत सी सेना को मार गिराया। जब उसने देखा कि हनुमानजी मूर्छित हो गए हैं, तब वह उन्हें नागपाश से बाँधकर ले गया।

He aimed the Brahmastra at Hanumanji (causing him to fall from the tree), but even while falling, he also killed many soldiers. When he saw that Hanumanji had fainted, he tied him up with the Nagpash.

(शिवजी कहते हैं-) हे भवानी सुनो, जिनका नाम जपकर ज्ञानी मनुष्य संसार के बंधन को काट डालते हैं, उनका दूत कहीं बंधन में आ सकता है? किंतु प्रभु के कार्य के लिए हनुमानजी ने स्वयं अपने को बंधा लिया।

(Shivji says-) “Hey Bhavani, listen, can the messenger of those whose name, when chanted, frees wise men from the cycle of birth and death, ever be in bondage? However, for the work of the Lord, Hanumanji bound himself.”

बंदर का बाँधा जानकर राक्षस दौड़े और कौतुक के लिए सभा में आए। हनुमान्‌जी ने जाकर रावण की सभा देखी। उसकी अत्यंत प्रभुता कुछ कही नहीं जाती।

Hearing about the monkey being captured, the demons ran and came to the assembly for amusement. Hanumanji went and saw Ravana’s assembly. His extreme power and glory cannot be described.

देवता और दिक्पाल हाथ जोड़कर बड़ी नम्रता के साथ भयभीत हुए, सब रावण की भौं ताक रहे हैं। उसका रुख देख रहे हैं, उसका ऐसा प्रताप देखकर भी हनुमान्‌जी के मन में जरा भी डर नहीं हुआ। वे ऐसे निःशंक खड़े रहे, जैसे सर्पों के समूह में गरुड़ निःशंक निर्भय) रहते हैं।

The gods and the guardians of the directions joined their hands, filled with great humility and fear, all watching Ravana’s demeanor in awe. Despite seeing his such glory, there was no fear in Hanumanji’s mind. He stood so fearless, like Garuda in a group of snakes.

हनुमानजी को देखकर रावण दुर्वचन कहता हुआ खूब हंसा। फिर पुत्र वध का स्मरण किया तो उसके हृदय में विषाद उत्पन्न हो गया।

After seeing Hanumanji, Ravan laughed loudly while saying bad words. Then, remembering the killing of his son, sorrow arose in his heart.

लंकापति रावण ने कहा- हे वानर! तू कौन है? किसके शक्ति से तूने वन को जला दिया? क्या तूने कभी मुझे (मेरा नाम और यश) कानों से नहीं सुना? हे धोखेबाज! मैं तुझे बिल्कुल विश्वासघात देख रहा हूँ।

Ravana said – Hey monkey! Who are you? By whose strength did you burn the forest? Have you never heard of me (my name and fame)? O deceiver! I am seeing complete betrayal in you.

“तूने किस पाप से राक्षसों को मारा? हे मूर्ख! बता, क्या तुझे प्राणों की भीति नहीं है? (हनुमान्‌जी ने कहा-) हे रावण! सुन, जिनका बल पाकर माया सम्पूर्ण ब्रह्मांडों के समूहों की रचना करती है,”

What sin did you commit to kill the demons? O fool! Tell me, are you not afraid of losing your life? (Hanuman said,) O Ravana! Listen, she whose strength creates the arrangement of all the groups of the cosmos,

जिनके शक्ति से हे दशशीश! ब्रह्मा, विष्णु, महेश (क्रमशः) सृष्टि का उत्पादन, पालन और संहार करते हैं, जिनके प्रभाव से सहस्रमुख (फणों) वाले शेषजी पर्वत और वनसहित समस्त ब्रह्मांड को सिर पर धारण करते हैं।

O Lord of Lords! Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh (respectively) create, sustain, and destroy the universe, by whose power the thousand-headed Sheshnag holds the entire cosmos, including mountains and forests, on his head.

जो देवताओं की सुरक्षा के लिए विविध प्रकार के शरीर धारण करते हैं और जो तुम्हारे जैसे अज्ञानियों को शिक्षा देने वाले हैं, जिन्होंने शिवजी के कठोर धनुष को तोड़ डाला और उसी के साथ राजाओं के समूह का गर्व चूर्ण कर दिया।

जिन्होंने श्वेत, काला, नीला और पीला को मार डाला, जो सभी के सभी अद्वितीय बलवान थे।

Those who assume various forms for the protection of the gods and who are the teachers of ignorant people like you, who broke the tough bow of Lord Shiva and shattered the pride of groups of kings.

Those who killed white, black, blue, and yellow, who were all uniquely powerful.

जिनके अल्प शक्ति से तुमने सभी जीवों को जीत लिया और जिनकी प्रिय पत्नी को तुम (बिना किसी परेशानी के) हमेशा पास रखा है, मैं वे दूत हूं।

I am the messenger of those whom you have conquered with little effort and whose beloved wife you always keep close (without any trouble).

मुझे तुम्हारी सत्ता के बारे में अच्छी तरह से पता है, सहस्रबाहु के साथ तुम्हारी युद्ध हुई थी और तुमने बालि के साथ युद्ध किया था और तुम्हारा जीता। हनुमान जी के गंभीर वचनों को सुनकर, रावण ने हंसी में बात को ठुकरा दिया।

“I am well aware of your dominance, you fought with a thousand arms and defeated Bali in battle. Hearing the serious words of Hanuman, Ravana laughed and dismissed the matter.”

हे (राक्षसों के) शासक, मुझे भूख लगी थी, (इसलिए) मैंने फल खाए और वानर स्वभाव के कारण वृक्ष तोड़े। हे (निशाचरों के) भवन, देह सबको परम प्रिय है। कुमार्ग पर चलने वाले (दुष्ट) राक्षस जब मुझे मारने लगे।

O (rulers of demons), I was hungry, so I ate fruits and, due to the nature of monkeys, broke trees. O (owners of night demons), the body is very dear to everyone. When the evil demons walking on the path to the path started to hit me.

तब उन्होंने जो मुझे मारा, मैंने भी उन्हें मारा। फिर तुम्हारे पुत्र ने मुझे बाँध लिया (किंतु) मुझे अपने बाँधे जाने की कोई लज्जा नहीं है। मैं तो अपने प्रभु का कार्य करना चाहता हूँ।

Then those who hit me, I also hit them. Then your son tied me up, but I have no shame in being tied up. I want to do the work of my lord.

हे रावण! मैं आपके सामने हाथ जोड़कर विनती करता हूँ, आप अभिमान छोड़कर मेरी सीख सुनें। आप अपने पवित्र कुल का विचार करके देखें और भ्रम को छोड़कर भक्त भयहारी भगवान्‌ को भजें।

Hey Ravana! I humbly request you, leaving aside your pride, listen to my advice. Consider the values of your noble lineage and, abandoning illusions, worship the fear-dispelling divine being.

“जो इंसान, पशुओं और पक्षियों को भी खा जाता है, वह काल भी जिसके डर से अत्यंत डरता है, उससे कदापि वैर न करो और मेरे कहने से जानकीजी को दे दो।”

“What is consumed by gods, demons, and all living beings, and even time fears them greatly, never have enmity with them, and give Janaki (Sita) to me at my request.”

सचमुच, श्री रघुनाथजी अपने शरणागतों के प्रेम और सुरक्षा के सागर हैं। जब आप उनकी शरण में आते हैं, तो वे आपके पापों को भूल जाते हैं और आपको अपनी शरण में स्थान देते हैं।

Indeed, Lord Raghunath is the ocean of love and protection for his devotees. When you seek his refuge, he forgets your sins and accommodates you in his shelter.

तुम श्री रामजी के पाद कमलों को हृदय में स्थान दो और लंका का अचल राज्य करो। ऋषि पुलस्त्यजी का यश निर्मल चंद्रमा के समान है। तुम उस चंद्रमा में कलंक नहीं बनना।

Place the lotus feet of Shri Ram in your heart and rule the unshakable kingdom of Lanka. The glory of Rishi Pulastya is like the pure moon. Do not become a blemish on that moon.

राम के बिना, वाणी की शोभा नहीं होती। मद-मोह को छोड़कर, ध्यान देने से देखो। हे देवताओं के शत्रु! सभी गहनों से सजी हुई सुंदरी स्त्री भी कपड़ों के बिना (नंगी) शोभा नहीं पाती।

Without the name of Ram, speech does not have beauty. Leave aside intoxication and infatuation, and observe. O enemies of the gods! Even a woman adorned with all jewels does not have beauty without clothes.

रामविमुख पुरुष की संपत्ति और प्रभुता होती है जो चली जाती है और जिसका पाना ना पाने के समान है। उन नदियों में जिनके मूल में कोई जलस्रोत नहीं है, वे वर्षा के बाद तुरंत ही सूख जाती हैं।

The wealth and power of a Ram-facing man is transient, akin to not attaining it at all. The rivers without a source at their origin, i.e., those which rely solely on rainfall, dry up immediately after the rainy season.

हे रावण! सुनो, मैं एक प्रतिज्ञा करके कहता हूँ कि रामविमुख की रक्षा करने वाला कोई भी नहीं है। हजारों शंकर, विष्णु और ब्रह्मा भी श्री रामजी के साथ द्रोह करने वाले तुमको नहीं बचा सकते।

“I say this with a vow, O Ravan! There is no one who protects those against Rama. Not even thousands of Shiva, Vishnu, and Brahma can save you from betraying Lord Rama.”

मोह वही लोग करते हैं जिनका मूल अज्ञान से उत्पन्न है, वे अत्यधिक कष्ट देने वाले, अहंकार की धारणा का त्याग करें और रघुकुल के स्वामी, कृपा सिंधु भगवान श्री रामचंद्रजी की पूजा करें।

Those who are driven by ignorance, are the ones who cause great pain, abandon the cloak of pride, and worship Lord Rama, the king of the Raghu dynasty, the ocean of compassion.

जैसे-जैसे हनुमानजी ने भक्ति, ज्ञान, वैराग्य और नीति से सनी हुई बहुत ही हित की वाणी कही, फिर भी उस महान अभिमानी रावण ने हंसते हुए (व्यंग्य से) कहा कि हमें इस बंदर ने बड़े ज्ञानी गुरु को प्राप्त किया है।

As Hanumanji spoke very beneficial words with devotion, knowledge, renunciation, and wisdom, still that great egotistical Ravana laughed (sarcastically) and said that we have found a great knowledgeable teacher in this monkey.

रे दुर्जन! तेरी मृत्यु निकट आ गई है। अधम! मुझे शिक्षा देने चला है। हनुमान्‌जी ने कहा- इससे उलटा ही होगा (अर्थात्‌ मृत्यु तेरी निकट आई है, मेरी नहीं)। यह तेरा मतिभ्रम (बुद्धि का फेर) है, मैंने प्रत्यक्ष जान लिया है।

O evil one! Your death has come near. Wicked one! I have come to teach you. Hanumanji said – it will be the opposite (meaning, death has come near you, not me). This is your delusion, I have understood it directly.

हनुमान्‌जी के वचन सुनकर वह बहुत ही नाराज हो गया। (और बोला-) हे! इस मूर्ख का प्राण क्यों नहीं छीन लेते हैं? सुनते ही राक्षस उन्हें मारने के लिए दौड़ लिए, तभी मंत्रियों के साथ विभीषणजी वहाँ पहुंचे।

After hearing Hanumanji’s words, he became very angry. (And said-) Hey! Why not take away this fool’s life? As soon as they heard it, the demons ran to kill them, and at that moment, Vibhishanji arrived there with the ministers.

उन्होंने सिर नवाकर और बहुत ही विनयपूर्वक रावण से कहा कि दूत को मारना नहीं चाहिए, यह नीति के खिलाफ है। हे गोसाईं, कोई अन्य दंड दिया जाना चाहिए। सबने कहा- भाई! यह सलाह अत्यंत उत्तम है।

“रावण ने हंसते हुए कहा- ठीक है, बंदर को अंग-भंग करके वापस भेज दिया जाए।”

He bowed his head and with great humility told Ravana that killing the messenger is against the policy. O lord, another punishment should be given. Everyone said, “Brother! This advice is excellent.”

Ravana chuckled and said, ‘Alright, send the monkey back after mutilating him.

मैं सबको समझाता हूँ कि बंदर की ममता पूँछ पर होती है। इसलिए, तेल में कपड़ा डुबोकर उसे इसकी पूँछ में बाँधकर फिर आग लगा दो।

I explain to everyone that a monkey’s love is on its tail. Therefore, soak the cloth in oil, tie it to its tail, and set it on fire.

जब बिना पूँछ के यह बंदर वहाँ (अपने स्वामी के पास) चला जाएगा, तो यह मूर्ख अपने मालिक को साथ ले आएगा। जिनकी इसने बहुत तारीफ की है, मैं उनकी प्रभुता (सामर्थ्य) को देखूँ।

When this monkey without a tail goes there (to his master), then this fool will bring his master along. Whose praise he has sung a lot, I should see their prowess.

इस भावार्थक पंक्ति को सुनते ही हनुमान जी मन में हंसी लेते हैं (और मन ही मन सोचते हैं) कि मुझे पता चल गया है, सरस्वती जी (इसे ऐसी बुद्धि प्रदान करने में) सहायक रही हैं। रावण के वचन सुनकर मूर्ख राक्षस वही (पूँछ में आग लगाने की) योजना बनाने लगे।

Upon hearing these words, Hanuman smiled inwardly (and silently thought) “I understand, Saraswati (has assisted in providing such wisdom).” Upon hearing Ravana’s words, the foolish demons began preparing (to set fire to the tail).

पूँछ के लपेटने में इतना कपड़ा और घी-तेल लगा कि नगर में कपड़ा, घी और तेल नहीं रहा। हनुमान्‌जी ने इस तरह का खेल खेला कि पूँछ बढ़ गई। नगरवासी लोग तमाशा देखने आए। वे हनुमान्‌जी की बड़ी पूँछ को पैर से ठोकर मारते हैं और उनकी हँसी करते हैं।

Hanumanji wrapped so much cloth and ghee oil around his tail that there was no cloth, ghee, or oil left in the city. Hanumanji played such a game that his tail grew longer. The people of the city came to watch the spectacle. They hit Hanumanji’s large tail with their feet and laughed at him.

ढोल बजते हैं, सभी लोग तालियाँ बजाते हैं। हनुमानजी को नगर में घुमाकर, फिर पूँछ में आग लगा दी। अग्नि को जलते हुए देखकर हनुमानजी तुरंत ही बहुत छोटे रूप में हो गए।

बंधन से मुक्त होकर वे सोने की अटारियों पर पहुंचे। उन्हें देखकर राक्षसों की स्त्रियाँ भयभीत हो गईं।

Upon playing the drums, everyone claps. Leading Hanumanji around the city, they then set fire to his tail. Seeing Agni burning, Hanumanji immediately became very small.

Upon breaking free from captivity, they ascended to the golden shores. Witnessing them, the demonesses were filled with fear.

तब उस समय भगवान्‌ के प्रेरणासे उनचासों पवन चलने लगे। हनुमान्‌जी अट्टहास करते हुए गर्जे और बढ़कर आकाश से उड़ गए।

At that time, inspired by the divine, ninety-nine winds started blowing. Hanuman laughed heartily, thundered, and soared higher into the sky.

मैं आपको एक हिंदी पर्रा प्रदान करूंगा, जैसा कि देह विशाल होती है, लेकिन बहुत ही हल्की (फुर्तीली) होती है। वे एक पलायन करके एक महल से दूसरे महल पर चढ़ जाते हैं। नगर जल रहा है और लोग भयभीत हो गए हैं। आग की करोड़ों भयानक लपटें झपट रही हैं।

“I will provide you a Hindi Parra, as the body is huge but very light (nimble). They climb from one palace to another by fleeing. The city is burning and people are terrified. Millions of terrifying flashes of fire are flickering.”

हे भगवान! हे देवी! इस अवसर पर हमें कौन रक्षा करेगा? (चारों ओर) यही स्वर सुनाई दे रहा है। हमने पहले ही कहा था कि यह वानर नहीं है, वानर का रूप धारण करने वाला कोई भगवान है।

“Hey Lord! Hey Goddess! Who will save us on this occasion? (All around) This same call is echoing. We had already said that this is not a monkey, someone is a deity in the form of a monkey.”

साधु की अपमानित की यह परिणाम है कि नगर, अनाथ के नगर के समान, जल रहा है। हनुमानजी ने एक ही क्षण में पूरे नगर को आग लगा दी। विभीषण का घर नहीं जलाया गया।

“The consequence of insulting a saint is that the city, like a city of orphans, is burning. Hanumanji set the whole city on fire in just one moment. Vibhishan’s house was not burned.”

(शिवजी कहते हैं-) हे पार्वती! जिन्होंने अग्नि को बनाया, हनुमानजी वे हीं के दूत हैं। इसलिए वे अग्नि से नहीं जले। हनुमानजी ने उलट-पलटकर (एक ओर से दूसरी ओर तक) सम्पूर्ण लंका को जला दिया। फिर वे समुद्र में कूद पड़े।

“(Shivji says-) Hey Parvati! For those who created fire, Hanumanji is their messenger. That’s why he did not burn in the fire. Hanumanji set the entire Lanka ablaze, turning it upside down (from one side to the other). Then he jumped into the sea.”

पूंछ बुझाकर, थकावट मिटाकर और फिर एक छोटे से रूप में हनुमानजी श्री जानकीजी के सामने हाथ जोड़कर खड़े हो गए।

“With humility, removing exhaustion and then taking a small form, Hanumanji stood in front of Sita Mata with folded hands.”

(हनुमानजी ने कहा-) हे माता! मुझे कोई पहचान दीजिए, जैसे श्री रघुनाथजी ने मुझे पहले दिया था। तब सीताजी ने चूड़ामणि उतारकर दी। हनुमानजी ने उसे बड़े उत्साह से ले लिया।

“(Hanumanji said-) Hey Mother! Please give me some recognition, like Shri Raghunathji had given me before. Then Sita Ji took off the gemstone necklace and gave it to him. Hanumanji took it joyfully.”

(जानकीजी ने कहा-) हे तात! मैं आपको मेरा प्रणाम अर्पित करती हूँ और यह कहती हूँ- हे प्रभु! जबकि आप सभी प्रकार से पूर्णतः संपन्न हैं (आपको किसी प्रकार की कामना नहीं है), फिर भी दीनों (दुःखियों) पर दया करना आपका विशेषता है (और मैं दीन हूँ)। इसलिए उस विशेषता को ध्यान में रखते हुए, हे नाथ! कृपा करके मेरे भारी संकट को दूर करें।

“(Sita Ji said-) Hey Father! I offer my greetings to you and say this- Hey Lord! Although you are completely fulfilled in every way (you have no desire), still having compassion for the distressed is your specialty (and I am distressed). Therefore, keeping that compassion in mind, Hey Lord! Please alleviate my heavy distress.”

हे प्रिय तात! मैं इंद्रपुत्र जयंत की कथा सुनाऊंगा और प्रभु को उनके तीरों का प्रभाव बताऊंगा। यदि महीने भर में कभी नाथ न आया, तो हम फिर कभी जीत नहीं सकेंगे।

“Hey, dear sir! I will narrate the story of Indra’s son Jayant and explain to the lord the prowess of his arrows. If the lord does not come within a month, then we will never be able to win again.”

हे पवनपुत्र हनुमान! बताओ, मैं अपनी प्राणों को कैसे बचाऊं! हे महाराज! तुम भी अब चले जा रहे हो। तुम्हें देखकर मेरी छाती में ठंडक आई थी। फिर मुझे वही समय और वही दिन की याद आती है।

“Hey son of the wind, Hanuman! Tell me, how should I preserve my life? Hey lord! You are also leaving now. Seeing you, a coolness came to my chest. Then I remember that same time and that same day.”

हनुमानजी ने समझाया और जानकीजी को अनेक प्रकार के धैर्य से संभाला, और उनके पादुकाओं को नमस्कार करके श्री रामचंद्रजी के पास चले गए।

“Hanumanji explained and comforted Sita in many ways, and after bowing to her feet, he proceeded towards Lord Shri Ram.”

जब वे चल रहे थे, तो हनुमान ने भारी गर्जन की, जिससे राक्षसों की स्त्रियों के गर्भ गिरने लगे। समुद्र को लांघकर वे इस ओर आए और वानरों को किलकिला के शब्द सुनाया।

“While they were walking, Hanuman roared loudly, causing the wombs of the demons’ women to drop. Crossing the ocean, they arrived on this side and made the monkeys hear the sound of joy.”

हनुमानजी को देखकर सभी खुश हो गए और उनकी दृष्टि से वानरों ने इसे अपना नया जन्म माना। हनुमानजी का चेहरा प्रसन्न है और उनके शरीर में अद्भुत तेज विकसित है, (जिससे उन्होंने समझ लिया कि) ये श्री रामचंद्रजी के कार्य को पूरा करने के लिए आए हैं।

“Seeing Hanumanji, everyone became happy and the monkeys considered it as their new birth. Hanumanji’s face is cheerful and his body is radiant with great vigor, (from which they understood) that they have come to fulfill the work of Lord Shri Ram.”

सभी हनुमानजी से मिले और बहुत ही खुश हो गए, जैसे कि तड़पती हुई मछली को पानी मिल गया हो। सभी आनंदित होकर नए-नए किस्से पूछते-सुनते हुए श्री रघुनाथजी के पास चले।

“Everyone met Hanumanji and became very happy as if a struggling fish had found water. Joyfully, they went to Lord Shri Raghunathji, asking and narrating new stories.”

तब सभी लोग मधुवन के अंदर आए और अंगद की सहमति से सभी ने मधुर फल (या मधु और फल) का आनंद उठाया। जब रक्षकों ने आक्रमण करना शुरू किया, तो सभी रक्षक भाग गए।

“At that moment, everyone entered the grove and, with Angad’s approval, enjoyed the sweet fruits (or honey and fruits). When the guards started attacking, all the guards fled.”

उन सभी ने बुलाया कि युवराज अंगद वन को खाली कर रहे हैं। इस सुनकर सुग्रीव खुश हो गए कि वानरराज का कार्य किया जा रहा है।

“They all cried out that Prince Angad was clearing the forest. Hearing this, Sugriva became happy that the work of the monkey king is being done.”

यदि सीताजी की खबर नहीं मिलती, तो क्या वे मधुवन के फल खा सकते थे? राजा सुग्रीव मन में यही विचार कर रहे थे कि समाज सहित वानर आ रहे हैं।

“If they hadn’t received news about Sita, could they have eaten the fruits of the forest? King Sugriva was contemplating in his mind that the monkeys were coming along with society.”

(सबने सुग्रीव के चरणों में सिर नवाया। कपिराज सुग्रीव सभी से प्रेमपूर्वक मिले। उन्होंने पूछा, “क्या सब ठीक है?” तब वानरों ने उत्तर दिया, “आपके चरणों के दर्शन से सभी ठीक हैं। श्री रामजी की कृपा से विशेष कार्य हुआ।”)

(They all bowed their heads at Sugriva’s feet. King of the monkeys Sugriva met everyone with great love. He asked, “Is everything alright?” Then the monkeys replied, “Everyone is fine with the sight of your feet. With the grace of Lord Rama, a special task has been accomplished.”)

हे प्रभु! हनुमान ने समस्त कार्य किया और सभी वानरों के जीवन बचा लिए। इस समाचार को सुनकर सुग्रीवजी हनुमान जी से पुनः मिले और समस्त वानर समुदाय के साथ श्री रघुनाथजी के पास चले।

“Hey Lord! Hanuman completed all tasks and saved the lives of all the monkeys. Upon hearing this news, Sugriva met Hanuman again and along with the entire monkey community, they went to Lord Raghunath.”

जब श्री रामजी ने वानरों को काम करते हुए देखा, तो उनके मन में खास आनंद हुआ। दोनों भाई स्फटिक के पत्थर पर बैठे थे। सभी वानर उनके पाँवों पर गिरकर प्रणाम किया।

When Shri Ramji saw the monkeys working, he felt a special joy in his heart. Both brothers were sitting on the crystal rock. All the monkeys bowed down at their feet.

प्रिय श्री रघुनाथजी, कृपा का विस्तार करने के लिए आपसे मिलकर वानर बहुत खुश हैं और आपसे कुशल मानते हैं। (वानरों ने कहा-) हे नाथ! आपके चरण कमलों के संदर्शन से अब हमें संतुष्टि है।

Dear Shri Raghunathji, the monkeys are very pleased to meet you and consider you well. (The monkeys said-) O Lord! We are now satisfied with the sight of your lotus feet.

(हनुमान जी ने कहा-) आपका नाम रात-दिन पहरा देने वाला है, आपका ध्यान ही प्रमुख है। नेत्रों को आपके पादों में लगाए रहना हमारे लिए अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण है, यही हमें सुरक्षित रखता है, फिर प्राण जाएँ तो हमें कौन सा मार्ग अपनाना चाहिए?

(Hanuman Ji said-) Your name is the one who guards day and night, your meditation is foremost. Keeping our eyes on your feet is extremely important for us, it keeps us safe, then which path should we follow if our life departs?

यात्रा के दौरान उन्होंने मुझे चूड़ामणि (निकालकर) दी। श्री रघुनाथजी ने उसे अपने ह्रदय से लगा लिया। (हनुमान्‌जी ने फिर कहा-) हे नाथ! दोनों नेत्रों में जल भरकर जानकीजी ने मुझसे कुछ वचन कहे।

During the journey, he gave me the gem (taking it off). Shri Raghunathji embraced it with his heart. (Hanuman Ji then said-) O Lord! Filling both eyes with water, Janakiji said some words to me.

छोटे भाई के साथ प्रभु के चरण पकड़ना (और कहना कि) आप दीनबंधु हैं, शरणागतों के दुःखों को हरने वाले हैं और मैं मन, वचन और कर्म से आपके चरणों की प्रेमिका हूँ। फिर स्वामी (आप) ने मुझे किस पाप से छोड़ा?

Holding the feet of the Lord along with my younger brother (and saying) that you are the friend of the needy, the remover of the sorrows of the sheltered, and I am a lover of your feet with heart, word, and deed. Then Lord (you) abandoned me for what sin?

(हाँ) मैं एक दोष अपना (निश्चित रूप से) मानती हूँ कि आपके वियोग के समय मेरे प्राण नहीं चले गए, किंतु हे नाथ! यह तो नेत्रों का अपराध है जो प्राण निकालने में हठपूर्वक बाधा डालते हैं।

(Yes) I definitely admit my fault that at the time of your separation, my life did not continue, but O Lord! This is the fault of the eyes that obstinately hinder the departure of the soul.

वियोग अग्नि है, शरीर रूई है और श्वास पवन है, इस प्रकार (अग्नि और पवन के संयोग से) यह शरीर क्षणमात्र में जल सकता है, परंतु नेत्र अपने हित के लिए प्रभु का स्वरूप देखकर (सुखी होने के लिए) जल (आँसू) बहाते हैं, जिससे वियोग की आग से भी देह जलने नहीं पाती।

सीताजी की परिस्थिति बहुत गंभीर है। हे दयालु! वह बिना कही ही बेहद दुखी है (कहने से आपको बहुत कष्ट होगा)।

Separation is fire, the body is cotton, and breath is air, in this way (with the combination of fire and air) this body can burn in an instant, but the eyes, for their welfare, shed tears by seeing the form of the Lord (to be happy), which prevents the body from burning from the fire of separation.

Sita’s situation is very serious. O compassionate one! She is extremely distressed without saying anything (it will cause you great distress to say).

हे करुणानिधान! उनका प्रत्येक पल कल्पना के समान बीतता है। अतः हे प्रभु! तुरंत चलें और अपनी भुजाओं के बल से दुष्टों के समूह को जीतकर सीताजी को ले आइए।

O ocean of compassion! Each moment of theirs passes like a dream. Therefore, O Lord! Let us go immediately and, with the strength of your arms, defeat the groups of evildoers and bring Sita back.

सीताजी के दुख सुनकर सुख के स्वर्ग में प्रभु के कमल नेत्रों में जल भर आया (और वे बोले-) मन, वचन और शरीर से जिसे मेरी ही गति (मेरा ही आश्रय) है, उसे क्या स्वप्न में भी विपत्ति हो सकती है?

Upon hearing Sita’s sorrow, tears filled the lotus eyes of the Lord in the abode of happiness (and he said-) For the one who is my only support (my refuge) in mind, word, and body, can there be adversity even in a dream?

हनुमान जी ने कहा- हे प्रभु! विपत्ति तो वही है जब आपका भजन-स्मरण न हो। हे प्रभो! राक्षसों की बात ही क्या है? आप शत्रु को जीतकर जानकीजी को ले आएंगे।

Hanuman Ji said- O Lord! Adversity is only when there is no remembrance of you. O Lord! What is the talk of demons? You will bring Janakiji back by defeating the enemy.

(भगवान्‌ कहने लगे-) हे हनुमान्‌! सुन, तेरे जैसा कोई भी मेरा उपकारी देवता, मनुष्य या मुनि कोई भी शरीरधारी नहीं है। मैं तेरे प्रत्युपकार के बदले में क्या करूँ, मेरा मन भी तेरे सामने नहीं हो सकता।

” (God said-) Hey Hanuman! Listen, there is no other deity like you, neither a human nor a sage, who is my benefactor. What can I do in return for your favor, my mind cannot even be present before you.”

हे पुत्र! सुन, मैंने ध्यान से सोचकर देखा है कि मैं तुझसे ऋणमुक्त नहीं हो सकता। देवताओं के पालक प्रभु बार-बार हनुमान जी की ओर देख रहे हैं। नेत्रों में प्रेम के आश्रु भरे हैं और शरीर बहुत ही उत्तेजित है।

“Hey son! Listen, I have thought carefully and realized that I cannot be indebted to you. The protectors of the gods repeatedly look towards Lord Hanuman. Tears of love fill their eyes and the body is extremely excited.”

प्रभु के वचन सुनकर और उनके (प्रसन्न) चेहरे तथा (उत्तेजित) अंगों को देखकर हनुमानजी आनंदित हो गए और प्रेम में विलक्षण होकर ‘हे भगवन्! मेरी रक्षा करो, रक्षा करो’ कहते हुए श्री रामजी के चरणों में गिर पड़े।

“Hearing the Lord’s words and seeing his (pleased) face and (excited) limbs, Hanumanji became joyful and, with a unique expression of love, fell at the feet of Shri Ramji, saying ‘Oh Lord! Protect me, protect me.”

प्रभु उन्हें बार-बार उठाना चाहते हैं, परंतु प्रेम में डूबे हुए हनुमान जी को चरणों से उठना सुहाना नहीं लगता। प्रभु के पाद कमल हनुमान जी के सिर पर हैं। उस स्थिति को याद करके शिवजी प्रेममग्न हो गए।

“The Lord wants to lift him repeatedly, but Hanumanji, immersed in love, does not find it pleasant to rise from his feet. The lotus feet of the Lord are on Hanumanji’s head. Remembering that situation, Shiva became immersed in love.”

फिर मन को सावधान करके शंकरजी अत्यंत सुंदर कथा कहने लगे- हनुमान जी को उठाकर प्रभु ने हृदय से जुड़ा और हाथ पकड़कर बहुत करीब बैठा लिया।

Then with caution, Shankarji began to narrate an extremely beautiful story – he lifted Hanuman ji, connected with him from the heart, and holding his hand, sat very close.

हे हनुमान! बताओ तो, रावण द्वारा सुरक्षित लंका और उसके बड़े बाँके किले को तुमने किस प्रकार दहलाया? हनुमान जी ने प्रभु को खुश देखकर और वे अहंकारहीन भाषण दिया।

Hey Hanuman! Tell me, how did you burn down the well-guarded Lanka and its mighty fortress by Ravana? Hanuman ji, seeing the Lord pleased, spoke words devoid of pride.

बंदर का लक्ष्य, यही महान प्रयास है कि वह एक डाल से दूसरी डाल पर चला जाता है। मैंने जो समुद्र पार करके सोने के नगर को जलाया और राक्षसों को मारकर अशोक वन को उजाड़ डाला।

यह सब तो हे श्री रघुनाथजी! आप ही का विजय है। हे नाथ! इसमें मेरी महिमा (प्रशंसा) कुछ भी नहीं है।

The goal of a monkey is precisely this great endeavor to move from one branch to another. I, who crossed the ocean, burned the Golden City and devastated the Ashoka forest by killing the demons.

All this, O Lord Raghunath! It is only your glory. O Master! There is no greatness of mine in this.

हे प्रभु! जिस पर आप प्रसन्न हों, उसके लिए कुछ भी कठिनता नहीं होती। आपके प्रभाव से रूई (जो स्वयं बहुत जल्दी जल जाने वाली वस्तु है) बड़े जलते हुए आग को निश्चित रूप से जला सकती है (अर्थात्‌ असंभव भी संभव हो सकता है)।

O Lord! For the one you are pleased with, there is no difficulty. By your influence, even cotton (which itself quickly burns) can surely ignite a big fire (meaning the impossible can become possible).

हे नाथ! मुझे अत्यंत सुख देने वाली अपनी स्थिर भक्ति कृपा करके दीजिए। हनुमान्‌जी की बहुत ही सरल वाणी सुनकर, हे भवानी! तब प्रभु श्री रामचंद्रजी ने ‘ऐसा ही हो’ कहा।

O Lord! Grant me your unwavering devotion that brings extreme happiness. Hearing the very simple words of Hanuman ji, O Goddess! Then Lord Shri Ramchandra said, “So be it.”

हे उमा! जिसने श्री रामजी का स्वभाव समझ लिया, उसे भजन छोड़कर अन्य कुछ भी सुखद नहीं लगता। वह स्वामी-सेवक के संवाद को जिसने अपने हृदय में ग्रहण किया, वही श्री रघुनाथजी के चरणों की भक्ति प्राप्त करता है।

O Uma! One who understands the nature of Shri Ramji, nothing else pleases him except devotion. He who has embraced the dialogue of master and servant in his heart attains devotion to the feet of Shri Raghunathji.

प्रभु के वचन सुनकर वानरगण उत्साहित हो गए- कृपालु आनंदकंद श्री रामजी की जय हो, जय हो, जय हो! इस पर श्री रघुनाथजी ने कपिराज सुग्रीव को बुलाया और कहा- तैयारी करो, चलो।

Hearing the Lord’s words, the vanara warriors exclaimed – Hail the compassionate joyous Lord Shri Ramji, victory, victory, victory! Upon this, Shri Raghunathji summoned the king of the monkeys, Sugriva, and said – Prepare yourselves, let’s go.

अब किस कारण किया जाए विलम्ब। वानरों को तुरंत निर्देश दें। (भगवान्‌ की) यह खेल (रावण वध की तैयारी) देखकर, बहुत से फूलों की वर्षा करते हुए और आनंदित होकर देवता आकाश से अपने-अपने लोक की ओर चले।

“Now, for what reason should delay be done? Immediately give orders to the monkeys.” Seeing this play (preparation for killing Ravana), showering many flowers, and rejoicing, the gods happily departed to their respective realms from the sky.

प्रारंभ में वानरराज सुग्रीव ने तत्काल वानरों को बुलाया, सेनानियों का समूह जमा हो गया। वानर-भालुओं के समूह विभिन्न रंगों में हैं और उनमें अत्यधिक बल है।

“In the beginning, Vanarraj Sugriva immediately summoned the monkeys, and the group of warriors assembled. The group of monkeys and bears are in various colors and possess immense strength.”

वे प्रभु के पादकमलों में शीर्ष को सलाम करते हैं। अद्भुत बलशाली बन्दर और वानर गरज रहे हैं। श्री रामजी ने सभी वानरों की सेना को देखा। तब उन्होंने कमल आंखों से अनुग्रहपूर्वक उनकी ओर दृष्टि डाली।

“They bow their heads in reverence at the lotus feet of the Lord. The mighty monkeys and bears are roaring. Lord Sri Ram saw the entire army of monkeys. Then, with compassionate eyes, he looked towards them.”

राम कृपा की शक्ति को प्राप्त कर श्रेष्ठ वानर जैसे उड़ने वाले बड़े पर्वत बन गए। तब श्री रामजी ने आनंदित होकर प्रस्थान किया। बहुत से सुंदर और शुभ लक्षण दिखे।

“By receiving the strength of Rama’s grace, the greatest monkeys became like big mountains soaring. Then, with joy, Lord Sri Ram departed. Many beautiful and auspicious signs were seen.”

जिनकी प्रसिद्धि सभी मंगलों से समृद्ध है, उनके प्रस्थान के समय शुभ संकेत होना, यह एक नियम है। प्रभु का प्रस्थान जानकी जी ने भी देखा। उनके बाएं आंख की पलकें झपक-झपककर मानो कह रही थीं (कि श्री रामजी आ रहे हैं)।

“Those whose fame is complete with all auspiciousness, it is a rule that there be auspicious signs at the time of their departure. Even Janaki Ji observed the departure of the Lord. The eyelids of her left eye were flickering as if saying (that Sri Ram is coming).”

जानकी जी के लिए जो-जो शुभ संकेत होते थे, वही-वही रावण के लिए अशुभ संकेत हुए। सेना निकली, उसका विवरण कौन कर सकता है? अनगिनत वानर और भालू गर्ज रहे हैं।

“The auspicious signs that occurred for Sita Ji turned into inauspicious signs for Ravana. The army marched, who can describe it? Countless monkeys and bears are roaring.”

जिनके पास केवल नाखून ही उनके शस्त्र हैं, वे अपनी इच्छानुसार (जहां चाहें वहां) चलने वाले बिना किसी रोक-टोक के रीछ-वानर पर्वतों और वृक्षों को धारण कर रहे हैं, कुछ आकाश मार्ग से और कुछ पृथ्वी पर चल रहे हैं। वे सिंह की भांति गर्ज रहे हैं। (उनके चलने और गर्जने से) दिशाओं के हाथी अशांति में हिल रहे हैं।

“Those whose only weapons are their claws, they are carrying mountains and trees according to their will (wherever they want) without any hindrance, some through the sky and some on the earth. They are roaring like lions. (With their movement and roaring) the elephants of the directions are trembling in the disturbance.”

जैसे हाथी दिशाओं को चिंगारित करने लगे, पृथ्वी हिलने लगी, पर्वत अशांत हो गए (कंपने लगे) और समुद्र उत्तेजित हो गए। गंधर्व, देवता, मुनि, नाग, किन्नर सब मन में उत्साहित हो गए कि (अब) हमारे दुःख समाप्त हो गए। अनेकों करोड़ों भयानक वानर योद्धा कटकटा रहे हैं और करोड़ों ही दौड़ रहे हैं। ‘प्रबल प्रताप कोसलनाथ श्री रामचंद्रजी की जय हो’ ऐसा उन्होंने पुकारते हुए वे उनके गुणों की प्रशंसा कर रहे हैं।

As the elephants began trumpeting in all directions, the earth started shaking, the mountains became restless, and the seas became turbulent. Gandharvas, gods, sages, serpents, and celestial beings all felt delighted in their hearts that our sorrows have now come to an end. Countless fierce monkey warriors are slashing and running in millions. With shouts of ‘Victory to the mighty valorous Lord Ram’, they sing praises to his virtues.

उदार (अत्यन्त श्रेष्ठ और महान) सर्पराज शेषजी भी सेना का भार नहीं उठा सकते, वे बार-बार प्रलोभित हो जाते (घबड़ा जाते) हैं और बार-बार कच्छप की कठिन पीठ को दाँतों से पकड़ते हैं। ऐसा करते (अर्थात्‌ बार-बार दाँतों को चुसकर कच्छप की पीठ पर निशाने बनाते हुए) वे कैसे आभूषणित हो रहे हैं मानो श्री रामचंद्रजी की विशाल प्रवाह यात्रा को अत्यंत सुंदर मानकर उसकी अद्वितीय पवित्र कथा को सर्पराज शेषजी कच्छप की पीठ पर लिख रहे हों।

Even the generous (supreme and great) serpent king Sheshji cannot bear the burden of the army. They repeatedly get tempted (nervous) and grab the tough shell of the tortoise with their teeth. Doing so (meaning, repeatedly marking the tortoise’s shell with their teeth), they are adorning themselves as if they are writing the immortal holy tale of Lord Ram’s magnificent journey, considering it extremely beautiful.

इस प्रकार श्री रामजी कृपानिधान समुद्र तट पर आ पहुंचे। अनेकों रीछ-वानर वीर यहाँ-वहाँ फल खाने लगे।

In this way, Lord Ram, along with his compassionate companions, reached the seashore. Many brave bears and monkeys started eating fruits here and there.

वहाँ (लंका में) हनुमान्‌जी ने लंका को जलाकर गए, तब से राक्षस डरते रहने लगे। अपने-अपने घरों में सभी सोचते हैं कि अब राक्षस कुल की रक्षा का कोई उपाय नहीं है।

Since Hanumanji burned Lanka, the demons have been fearful. They contemplate in their respective homes that there is no way to protect the demon race anymore.

जिसके दूत का विवरण नहीं किया जा सकता, उसके स्वयं नगर में आने पर कौन भला होगा (हम लोगों की बड़ी बुरी स्थिति होगी)? नगरवासियों के दूतों के शब्द सुनकर मंदोदरी बहुत ही चिंतित हो गई।

For one whose messenger’s strength cannot be described, what good will it be (we will be in a very bad situation)? Hearing the words of the city’s messengers, Mandodari became very distressed.

वह एकांत में हाथ जोड़कर पति (रावण) के पादों में श्रद्धा बख्शी और नीतिरस में पगी हुई वाणी बोली- हे प्रियतम! श्री हरि से विरोध छोड़ दीजिए। मेरे वचन को अत्यंत ही हितकर मानकर हृदय में धारण कीजिए।

She folded her hands in solitude and placed them at her husband’s (Ravana’s) feet, and with a voice filled with humility, she said, “O beloved! Please abandon your opposition to Lord Hari. Embrace my words with utmost benevolence and hold them in your heart.”

जिनके दूत की कर्मणी का चित्रण होता है, उनके विचार करते ही (स्मरण होते ही) राक्षसियों की स्त्रियों का गर्भ गिर जाता है, हे प्यारे स्वामी! यदि आप भला चाहते हैं, तो अपने मंत्री को बुलाकर उनकी स्त्री के साथ उसे भेज दीजिए।

At the mere thought of those whose messengers’ actions are contemplated, the wombs of the demonesses collapse, my beloved Lord! If you desire goodness, then summon your minister and send him along with their wives.

सीता आपके कमलों के रूपी कुल वन को दुःख देने वाली जाड़े की रात्रि के समान आई है। हे नाथ। सुनिए, सीता को लौटाए (देने) बिना शम्भु और ब्रह्मा के किए भी आपका कल्याण नहीं हो सकता।

Sita has come like the cold night that troubles your lotus-like family forest. O Lord! Listen, without returning Sita, even the actions of Shiva and Brahma cannot bring you prosperity.

श्री रामजी के तीर सर्पों के समूह की भाँति हैं और राक्षसों का समूह मेंढ़क की भाँति। जब तक वे इन्हें ग्रहण नहीं करते (निगल नहीं लेते) तब तक हठ छोड़कर उपाय करें।

The arrows of Lord Ram are like a group of serpents, and the group of demons is like a group of frogs. Until they do not swallow them, abandon stubbornness and find a solution.

मूर्ख और विश्व प्रसिद्ध अभिमानी रावण उसकी वाणी सुनकर खूब हँसा (और बोला-) स्त्रियों का स्वभाव वास्तव में बहुत ही डरपोक होता है। मंगल में भी भय करती है। तुम्हारा मन (हृदय) बहुत ही कमजोर है।

The foolish and world-famous arrogant Ravana laughed upon hearing his words and said, “The nature of women is truly very cowardly. They fear even in auspicious occasions. Your mind (heart) is very weak.”

यदि वानर सेना आएगी तो दिनी दोहाड़ में बेचारे राक्षस उसे खाकर अपना जीवन चलाएंगे। लोकपाल भी जिसके भय से कांपते हैं, उसकी स्त्री भी डरती है, यह बड़ी हँसी की बात है।

If the army of monkeys comes, the poor demons will sustain themselves by eating them in broad daylight. It’s quite amusing that even the wives of those who make Lokpal tremble are afraid.

रावण ने ऐसा कहकर मुस्कुराते हुए उसे अपने हृदय में ले लिया और प्रेम को बढ़ाते हुए वह सभा में चला गया। मंदोदरी चिंता में पड़ गईं कि उनके पति के प्रति भगवान ने अभिप्राय किया।

Ravana said this with a smile, embraced him in his heart, and with increasing affection, he went to the assembly. Mandodari began to worry that fate had turned against her husband.

सभा में बैठते ही उसने सुना कि शत्रु की सेना समुद्र के पार आ गई है, तब उसने अपने मंत्रियों से सलाह मांगी कि अब क्या किया जाए। मंत्रियों ने सबको हँसाते हुए कहा कि चुप रहो, यहाँ सलाह की कोई जरूरत नहीं है।

आपने देवताओं और राक्षसों को पराजित कर लिया है, तो कुछ कठिनाई तो नहीं आई। अब मनुष्य और वानर कितने हैं?

As soon as he sat in the assembly, he heard the news that the enemy’s entire army had crossed the sea. He then asked his ministers for advice on what to do next. The ministers laughed and said, “Keep quiet, there is no need for advice here.”

You have defeated the gods and demons, so there was no difficulty at all. Now, how many humans and monkeys are there?

यदि मंत्री, वैद्य और गुरु भय या आशा से बोलते हैं, तो राज्य, शरीर और धर्म का नाश हो जाता है।

If ministers, physicians, and teachers speak out of fear or hope, then the destruction of kingdom, body, and righteousness occurs swiftly.

रावण को भी वही सहायता मिली। मंत्री उसे बड़ी-बड़ी बातें सुनाते हुए स्तुति करते हैं। उसी समय विभीषणजी आ गए। उन्होंने बड़े भाई के पैरों में सिर झुकाया।

The same help was also extended to Ravana. The ministers praised him, narrating big stories. At that moment, Vibhishana arrived. He bowed his head at his elder brother’s feet.

फिर से सिर नवाकर अपने आसन पर बैठ गए और आज्ञा प्राप्त करके ये वचन बोले- हे कृपाल! जब आपने मुझसे बात की है, तो हे तात! मैं अपनी बुद्धि के अनुसार आपके हित की बात कहता हूँ।

They bowed their heads again and sat on their seats, receiving instructions, and spoke these words: “O merciful one! When you have asked me to speak, O lord! I speak for your benefit according to my intelligence.”

जो व्यक्ति अपने कल्याण, यश, बुद्धि, शुभ गति और विभिन्न प्रकार के सुख की इच्छा करता है, वह हे स्वामी! परस्त्री के मुख को चाँद की तरह त्याग दे।

The person who desires his welfare, fame, intelligence, progress, and various pleasures, O lord! Should abandon the face of another woman like the moon of the fourth day.

चौदहों लोकों का एक ही स्वामी होने के कारण, वह जीवों के खिलाफ वैर करके स्थित नहीं रह सकता। जो व्यक्ति गुणवत्ता और बुद्धिमत्ता का समुद्र हो, उसे चाहे थोड़ा भी लालच हो, तो भी कोई उसे भला नहीं समझता।

Because there is only one master of all fourteen worlds, he cannot remain stable by harboring enmity towards living beings. Even if a person is the ocean of virtues and intelligence, if there is even a little greed in him, no one considers him good.

हे नाथ! काम, क्रोध, मद और लोभ- ये सभी नरक के मार्ग हैं, इन सबको त्यागकर श्री रामचंद्रजी की भक्ति करें, जिन्हें संत (सत्पुरुष) भक्ति करते हैं।

O lord! Lust, anger, pride, and greed – these are all paths to hell. Abandoning all these, worship Lord Rama, whom the saints adore.

हे तात! राम मनुष्यों के राजा ही नहीं हैं। वे सम्पूर्ण लोकों के स्वामी और समय के समय भी सम्पूर्ण काल हैं। वे ऐस्वर्य, यश, श्री, धर्म, वैराग्य, और ज्ञान के खजाने भी हैं, वे निर्विकार, अजन्मा, सर्वव्यापी, अजेय, अनादि, और अनंत ब्रह्म हैं।

O sir! Lord Rama is not just the king of humans. He is the master of all worlds and is even beyond time. He is the treasure of all wealth, fame, glory, righteousness, detachment, and knowledge. He is immutable, unborn, omnipresent, unconquerable, beginningless, and infinite Brahman.

उनकी कृपा के समुद्र भगवान्‌ ने पृथ्वी, ब्राह्मण, गो और देवताओं के हित के लिए ही मनुष्य शरीर धारण किया है। हे भाई! सुनो, वे सेवकों को आनंद देने वाले, दुष्टों के समूह का नाश करने वाले और वेद और धर्म की रक्षा करने वाले हैं।

It is by the ocean of their grace that the Lord has taken human form for the welfare of the Earth, Brahmins, cows, and gods. Listen, O brother! They are the ones who delight their servants, destroy the group of evildoers, and protect the Vedas and righteousness.

मेरे प्रिय, उन्हें समर्पित करके उनका मस्तक बौना। वे परमात्मा के शरणागत हैं, जो दुःख को दूर करते हैं। हे नाथ! उन परमेश्वर को जानकी का भगत बना दीजिए और प्रेम के बिना श्रीराम की आराधना कीजिए।

“Offering them devotedly, bow down their heads. They are surrendered to the Supreme, who alleviates sorrow. O Lord! Make them devotees of Janaki and worship Sri Ram without affection.”

जो सम्पूर्ण विश्व के खिलाफ अपराध करता है, उसके शरण होने पर भगवान भी उसे छोड़ नहीं देते। जिनका नाम तीनों दोषों का समापन करने वाला है, वे ही भगवान मानव रूप में प्रकट होते हैं। हे रावण! इसे अपने हृदय में स्थान दें।

“The one who sins the entire world, even the Lord does not abandon him upon seeking refuge. Those whose name is the destroyer of all three afflictions, they alone manifest as the Lord in human form. O Ravana! Understand this in your heart.”

हे दशनन! मैं बार-बार आपके पादों में शरण लेता हूँ और विनय करता हूँ कि मान, मोह और मद को छोड़कर आप कोसलेश्वर श्रीराम की आराधना करें।

मुनि पुलस्त्य ने अपने शिष्य को इस सन्देश को हस्ताक्षर किया है। हे पिता! मुझे इस सुन्दर मौके पर तत्काल यह बात आपसे कह दी है।

“O ten-headed one! I repeatedly seek refuge at your feet and humbly request that you worship Lord Ram, the king of Kosala, by abandoning pride, attachment, and arrogance.”

“Sage Pulastya has sent this message through his disciple’s hands. O father! Upon receiving this beautiful opportunity, I have immediately conveyed this matter to you.”

माल्यवान नामक एक बहुत ही बुद्धिमान मंत्री था। उसने उन (विभीषण) के वचन सुनकर बहुत आनंद माना (और कहा-) हे पिता! आपके छोटे भाई नीति विभूषण (नीति को भूषण रूप में धारण करने वाले, अर्थात्‌ नीतिमान) हैं। विभीषण जो कुछ कह रहे हैं, उसे अपने हृदय में स्थान दें।

“Malyavan was a very wise minister. He felt very happy upon hearing those words (and said-) O father! Your younger brother Vibhishan is the ornament of righteousness (one who adorns righteousness as an ornament, meaning righteous). Whatever Vibhishan is saying, hold it in your heart.”

(रावण ने कहा-) ये दोनों मूर्ख शत्रु की महिमा बखान रहे हैं। कोई है यहाँ? इन्हें दूर करो न! तब माल्यवान अपने घर की ओर चले गए और विभीषणजी ने हाथ जोड़कर फिर कहना शुरू किया।

(Ravana said-) These two fools are praising the enemy’s glory. Is anyone here? Get rid of them! Then Malyavan returned home and Vibhishan, joining his hands, began to speak again.

हे प्रभु! पुराण और वेद विवेक (बुद्धि) और अविवेक (मूर्खता) के बारे में कहते हैं कि इस दुनिया में सब कुछ हमारे मन की सोच पर निर्भर करता है। जहाँ बुद्धि है, वहाँ सुख और समृद्धि की स्थिति होती है और जहाँ अविवेक है, वहाँ दुःख और पीड़ा ही होती है।

“Hey Lord! The scriptures and Vedas talk about discernment (intelligence) and folly (foolishness), stating that everything in this world depends on our mental state. Where there is intelligence, there is a state of happiness and prosperity, and where there is folly, there is only suffering and agony.”

तुम्हारे हृदय में उलटी समझ है। इसलिए तुम हित को अहित और शत्रु को मित्र मानते हो। जो राक्षस कुल के लिए कालरात्रि (के समान) हैं, उनके लिए तुम्हारी सीता में विशेष प्रेम है।

“You have a reversed understanding in your heart. Hence, you consider harm as a benefit and the enemy as a friend. Those who are like a nightmare for the demon race, for them you have special affection in your Sita.”

हे पिताजी! मैं आपके चरणों को पकड़कर भीख मांगता हूँ। कृपया मेरी विनती को स्नेहपूर्वक स्वीकार करें और श्री रामजी को सीताजी का दान दें, ताकि आपका कोई अहित न हो।

“Oh, father! I beg for alms by holding onto your feet. Please kindly accept my request and give Sita to Lord Rama, so that you incur no harm.”

विभीषण ने पंडितों, पुराणों और वेदों की स्वीकृत वाणी से नीति की बातें कहीं। पर उन्हें सुनते ही रावण क्रोधित होकर उठा और कहा, “अरे दुराचारी! अब मृत्यु तेरे समीप आ गई है।”

“Vibhishan spoke words of wisdom approved by the sages, scriptures, and Vedas. But upon hearing them, Ravana, enraged, stood up and said, ‘Oh wicked one! Now death has come near you.'”

अरे अज्ञानी! तू सदैव मेरे पालने में है, पर हे मूर्ख! तेरा पक्ष शत्रु का ही पसंद है। अरे दुष्ट! बता, जगत में मैंने किसी को अपनी शक्ति से नहीं हराया है?

“Oh fool! You always depend on my sustenance, yet, oh ignorant one! You seem to prefer the enemy’s side. Oh wicked one! Tell me, in this world, is there anyone whom I have not defeated with the strength of my arms?”

मेरे नगर में रहने वाले तपस्वियों पर रावण का प्रेम था। मूर्ख! उनके पास जाओ और उन्हें नीति की बातें सिखाओ। रावण ने ऐसा कहकर उन्हें मारा, लेकिन उनके छोटे भाई विभीषण ने (मारे जाने के बाद भी) उसके चरणों को बार-बार पकड़ा।

“In my city, Ravana loved the ascetics. Fool! Go to them and teach them the ways of righteousness. Saying this, Ravana kicked them, but his younger brother Vibhishan repeatedly held onto his feet, even after being kicked.”

(शिवजी कहते हैं-) “हे उमा! संत की यही प्रशंसा है कि वे बुराई करने वाले के प्रति भी भलाई ही करते हैं।” (विभीषणजी ने कहा-) “आप मेरे पिता के समान हैं, मुझे मारा जाना सही था, परंतु हे नाथ! आपका सर्वोत्तम भला श्री रामजी की पूजा में ही है।”

(इतना कहकर) विभीषण अपने मंत्रियों को संग लेकर आकाश मार्ग में निकले और सबको सुनाते हुए उन्होंने ऐसा कहा।

(Shivaji says,) “Oh Uma! The praise of saints lies in their ability to do good even to those who do evil.” (Vibhishan says,) “You are like my father, it was right to be punished, but oh Lord! Your ultimate good lies in worshiping Lord Rama.”

(After saying this much) Vibhishan, along with his ministers, went on the path of the sky and started saying this to everyone.

श्री रामजी सत्य संकल्प एवं सर्वशक्तिमान प्रभु हैं और हे रावण! तुम्हारी सभा काल के वश में है। अतः मैं अब श्री रघुवीर की शरण लेता हूँ, मुझे क्षमा करना।

Lord Rama is the embodiment of truth and omnipotent, and, oh Ravana! Your time is at its end. Therefore, I now seek refuge in Lord Raghuvir, please forgive me.

ऐसा कहकर विभीषणजी जैसे ही निकले, सभी राक्षस अमर्णी हो गए। उनकी मृत्यु निश्चित हो गई। (शिवजी कहते हैं-) “हे भवानी! साधु का अपमान तुरंत ही संपूर्ण कल्याण की हानि कर देता है।”

As soon as Vibhishanji left, all the demons became lifeless. Their death was inevitable. (Shivaji says,) “Oh, Bhavani! Disrespecting a saint immediately brings about the destruction of all welfare.”

रावण ने जिस क्षण विभीषण को त्यागा, उसी क्षण वह अभाग्यशाली धनी से वंचित हो गया। विभीषणजी हर्षित होकर मन में अनेकों मनोरथ करते हुए श्री रघुनाथजी के पास चले।

The moment Ravana abandoned Vibhishan, he lost all his prosperity. Delighted, Vibhishan went to Lord Raghunath with many desires in his heart.

(वे सोचते जाते थे-) “मैं जाकर भगवान्‌ के कोमल और लाल वर्ण के सुंदर चरण कमलों के दर्शन करूँगा, जो सेवकों को सुख देने वाले हैं, जिन चरणों का स्पर्श पाकर ऋषि पत्नी अहल्या तर गईं और जो दंडकवन को पवित्र करने वाले हैं।”

(They kept thinking-) “I will go and behold the beautiful red-colored lotus feet of the Lord, which bestow happiness upon His devotees, the touch of which purified the sage’s wife Ahalya, and which sanctified the Dandakaranya forest.”

जिन चरणों को जानकीजी ने हृदय में धारण कर रखा है, जो कपटमृग के साथ पृथ्वी पर उसे पकड़ने को दौड़े थे और जो चरणकमल साक्षात्‌ शिवजी के हृदय रूपी सरोवर में विराजते हैं, मेरा अहोभाग्य है कि उन्हीं को आज मैं देखूँगा।

“The feet that Sita holds dearly in her heart, which ran on the earth chasing the deceptive deer and which are directly present in the heart-shaped lake of Shiva, it is my misfortune that I will behold them today.”

जिन चरणों की पादुकाओं में भरतजी ने अपना मन लगा रखा है, अहा! आज मैं उन्हीं चरणों को अभी इन नेत्रों से देखूँगा।

“The feet in whose sandals Bharatji has placed his heart, oh! Today, I will behold those very feet with these eyes.”

इस प्रकार प्रेमसहित विचार करते हुए वे शीघ्र ही समुद्र के इस पार आ गए, जहाँ श्री रामचंद्रजी की सेना थी। वानरों ने विभीषण को आते देखा, तो उन्होंने जाना कि शत्रु का कोई विशेष दूत है।

With such loving thoughts, they soon arrived on this side of the ocean, where Lord Ram’s army was stationed. When the monkeys saw Vibhishan approaching, they realized that he was a special envoy of the enemy.

उन्हें पहरे पर ठहराकर वे सुग्रीव के पास आए और उनको सब समाचार सुनाए। सुग्रीव ने श्री रामजी के पास जाकर कहा- “हे रघुनाथजी! सुनिए, रावण का भाई आप से मिलने आया है।”

They were stationed on guard duty and came to Sugriva, informing him of all the news. Sugriva went to Lord Rama and said, “Oh Raghunathji! Listen, Ravana’s brother has come to meet you.”

प्रभु श्री रामजी ने कहा- “हे मित्र! तुम क्या सोचते हो (तुम्हारी क्या राय है)?” वानरराज सुग्रीव ने कहा- “हे महाराज! सुनिए, राक्षसों की माया को समझ पाना मुश्किल है। यह इच्छानुसार रूप बदलने वाला (छली) न जाने किस कारण आया है।”

Lord Sri Rama said, “Hey friend! What do you think (what is your opinion)?” Vanararaj Sugriva said, “Oh King! Listen, it is difficult to understand the illusion of the demons. This shape-shifter has come for some unknown reason.”

(जान पड़ता है) “यह मूर्ख हमारा भेद लेने आया है, इसलिए मुझे तो यही अच्छा लगता है कि इसे बाँध रखा जाए।” (श्री रामजी ने कहा-) “हे मित्र! तुमने नीति तो अच्छी विचारी, परंतु मेरा प्रण तो है शरणागत के भय को हर लेना।”

प्रभु के वचन सुनकर हनुमान्‌जी हर्षित हुए और मन ही मन कहने लगे कि भगवान्‌ कैसे शरणागतवत्सल (शरण में आए हुए पर पिता की भाँति प्रेम करने वाले) हैं।

(It is understood) “This fool has come to spy on us, so I think it’s best to keep him captive.” (Lord Sri Rama said-) “Hey friend! Your strategy is well thought out, but I am inclined to alleviate the fear of those who seek refuge.”

Upon hearing the Lord’s words, Hanumanji became delighted and inwardly thought, “How compassionate is the Lord, loving those who seek refuge just like a father.”

(श्री रामजी फिर बोले-) “जो मनुष्य अपने अहित का अनुमान करके शरण में आए हुए का त्याग कर देते हैं, वे पामर (क्षुद्र) हैं, पापमय हैं, उन्हें देखने में भी हानि है (पाप लगता है)।”

(Lord Sri Rama then said-) “Those individuals who, by suspecting their welfare, forsake those who have sought refuge, they are ignoble, sinful, and even seeing them brings harm (feels sinful).”

पराश्रय में आने पर मैं उसे भी नहीं छोड़ता, जिस पर करोड़ों ब्राह्मणों का वध हुआ हो। मेरे सामने आते ही उसके करोड़ों जन्मों के पाप नष्ट हो जाते हैं।

Once a person seeks refuge, I do not abandon them, even if they are guilty of killing millions of Brahmins. As soon as they come before me, the sins of their millions of births are destroyed.

दोषी का यह प्राकृतिक स्वभाव होता है कि मेरा प्रसाद उसे कभी आनंदित नहीं करता। क्या वह (रावण का भाई) निश्चित रूप से दुर्जन हृदय का होता, तो क्या वह मेरे सामने आ सकता था?

Could someone with such an inherently sinful nature ever find solace in my worship? If he (Ravana’s brother) had indeed been of an evil heart, could he have approached me?

राम की भक्ति में सच्चा ह्रदय हो, वही मेरे संगी बनता है। मुझे कपट और धोखेबाजी सहन नहीं होती। अगर उसे रावण ने परीक्षण के लिए भेजा है, तो भी हे सुग्रीव! कोई भी भय या हानि मुझे नहीं है।

One who has a pure heart devoted to Ram, becomes my friend. I cannot tolerate deceit and treachery. Even if Ravana sends him for examination, still, O Sugriva! I have no fear or harm.

जैसे हे मित्र! इस विश्व में जितने भी राक्षस हैं, वे सभी लक्ष्मण के एक क्षण में मारे जा सकते हैं और अगर वह भयभीत होकर मेरी शरण में आया है, तो मैं उसे प्राणों की तरह संरक्षित करूँगा।

Just as, O friend! In this world, all the demons can be killed in a moment by Lakshman, and if he comes to me scared seeking refuge, then I will protect him like my own life.

कृपा के आधार पर श्री रामचंद्र ने मुस्कुराते हुए कहा- दोनों ही परिस्थितियों में उसे साथ ले आओ। तब अंगद और हनुमान सहित सुग्रीव ‘कपालु श्री रामचंद्र की जय हो’ कहकर चले।

With grace, Shri Ram smilingly said, “Bring him in both situations.” Then, Sugriva along with Angad and Hanuman, said “Victory to the courageous Shri Ram” and proceeded.

आदर सहित विभीषणजी को आगे बढ़ाकर वानर फिर वहाँ चले, जहाँ करुणा की झील श्री रघुनाथजी बैठे थे। नेत्रों को आनंद का उपहार देने वाले (अत्यंत सुखी) दोनों भाइयों को विभीषणजी ने दूर से ही देखा।

With respect, leading Vibhishan forward, the monkeys then proceeded to where the reservoir of compassion, Shri Raghunathji, sat. Vibhishan saw both brothers, who were givers of joy to the eyes, from afar.

फिर आकर्षण से भरे धाम श्री रामजी को देखकर वे पलक (बिना हिचकिचाहट के) रोक लिए और स्थिर होकर एक ही जगह देखते रह गए। प्रभु के विशाल भुजाएँ हैं, जो लाल कमल के समान नेत्रों के साथ हैं और जिनका साँवला शरीर भक्तों के भय को नष्ट करने में सक्षम है।

Then, upon seeing the divine abode of Shri Ram filled with splendor, they stopped blinking (without hesitation), stood still, and remained fixed in one place. The Lord has vast arms, eyes like red lotuses, and a dark body capable of dispelling the fears of devotees.

उसके कंधे सिंह के समान हैं, जो विशाल वक्षःस्थल (चौड़ी छाती) से अत्यंत शोभा बिखेर रहा है। उसका मुख अनगिन्त कामदेवों को मोहित करने वाला है। प्रभु के स्वरूप को देखकर विभीषणजी के नेत्रों में (प्रेमाश्रुओं का) जल भर आया और शरीर अत्यंत पुलकित हो गया। फिर मन में धीरज धारण करके उन्होंने कोमल वचन कहे।

His shoulders are like those of a lion, which is spreading extreme splendor from its broad chest. His face captivates countless celestial beings. Upon seeing the form of the Lord, tears of love filled Vibhishan’s eyes and his body trembled intensely. Then, gathering courage in his heart, he spoke softly.

मैं आपको एक हिंदी पड़ा प्रदान करूँगा, जैसे हे परमेश्वर! मैं रावण का भाई दशमुख हूँ। हे देवताओं के प्रेषकों! मेरा जन्म राक्षस संगत में हुआ है। मेरे तामसिक शरीर के साथ, मुझे स्वभाव से ही पाप पसंद है, जैसे अंधेरे को उल्लू का स्वाभाविक प्रेम होता है।

“I will provide you a Hindi Parra, like oh God! I am Ravana’s brother Dashamukha. O protectors of the gods! I was born in a demon clan. With my tamasic body, I naturally prefer sin, just as darkness naturally loves the owl.”

मैं सुनता हूँ कि आपका सुयश आपके कानों में प्रभु भव के भय का नाश करने वाले हैं। हे श्री रघुवीर! जो दुखियों के दुःख को दूर करने और शरणागत को सुख देने वाले हैं। मेरी रक्षा कीजिए, कृपया मेरी रक्षा कीजिए।

I hear that your success destroys the fear of birth and death in your ears. Oh Shri Ram! Who removes the sorrows of the sorrowful and gives happiness to the sheltered. Please protect me, please protect me.

प्रभु ने उन्हें ऐसा कहकर शीघ्र उठने का दृश्य देखा, तो वे अत्यंत हर्षित हो गए। विभीषणजी के दीन वचन सुनकर प्रभु का मन बहुत ही प्रिय हुआ। उन्होंने अपनी विशाल भुजाओं से उन्हें पकड़कर हृदय से लगा लिया।

Seeing Lord Rama bowing down to them, they immediately rose up with great joy. Hearing the humble words of Vibhishana, Lord Rama’s heart was deeply touched. He embraced him with his massive arms, holding him close to his heart.

छोटे भाई लक्ष्मणजी के साथ गले मिलकर उन्हें अपने पास बिठाकर, श्री रामजी भक्तों के भय को दूर करने वाले वचनों को बोले – “हे रावण! अपने परिवार के साथ तुम्हारा कुशल मानना। तुम्हारा निवास कुछ अच्छी जगह पर नहीं है।”

Embracing his younger brother Lakshmana, Lord Rama seated him close to himself and spoke words that dispelled the fears of his devotees, saying, “Oh Ravana! Consider yourself and your family well. Your dwelling is not in a good place.”

दिन-रात दुष्टों की संघटना में बसे हो। (ऐसे परिस्थिति में) हे मित्र! तुम्हारा धर्म कैसे व्यवहार किया जाता है? मैं तुम्हारे सभी आचरणों को जानता हूँ। तुम अत्यधिक नैतिक हो, तुम्हें अनैतिकता का सामना नहीं करना पड़ता।

You dwell amidst the assembly of evildoers day and night. (In such circumstances) O friend! How do you uphold your righteousness? I know all your conduct. You are extremely ethical, you do not tolerate injustice.

हे सर! नरक में रहना अच्छा है, परंतु ईश्वर दुष्ट के साथ संगति कभी नहीं करता। (विभीषणजी ने कहा-) हे रघुनंदन! अब मैं आपके चरणों का दर्शन कर कुशल से हूँ, जो आपने मुझे अपना सेवक मानकर दया की है।

O respected sir! Residing in hell is preferable, but the Almighty never associates with the wicked. (Vibhishana said-) O Raghunathji! Now I am fortunate to have the sight of your feet, which you have bestowed upon me by considering me your servant.

तब तक जीव को कुशल नहीं और न स्वप्न में भी उसके मन को शांति होती है, जब तक वह शोक की भावना (विषय-कामना) को छोड़कर श्री रामजी की उपासना नहीं करता।

Until then, the soul is not at peace, nor is its mind even in dreams, until it forsakes the desires of grief and worships Lord Rama.

लोभ, मोह, मत्सर, मद, और गर्व आदि अनेक दुष्टताएँ तब तक हृदय में बनी रहती हैं, जब तक कि धनुष और बाण और कमर में तरक्षु न किए हुए श्री रघुनाथजी के चित्त में न बसे।

Greed, attachment, envy, pride, and arrogance, among others, many evils reside in the heart until the bow, arrow, and quiver are not held in the hands of Lord Raghunath in the mind.

ममता पूर्ण अंधेरी रात है, जो राग-द्वेष की उल्लूओं को सुख देती है। वह (ममता रूपी रात्रि) तब तक जीव के मन में बसती है, जब तक प्रभु (आप) का प्रताप रूपी सूर्य उदय नहीं होता।

Maternal affection is like a pitch-dark night that gives comfort to the owls of attachment and aversion. It resides in the mind of the soul until the sunrise of the Lord’s glory occurs.

हे श्री रामजी! आपके चरणारविन्द का दर्शन करके अब मैं कुशल से हूँ, मेरा भारी भय मिट गया। हे कृपालु! जिस पर आप अनुकूल होते हैं, उसे तीनों प्रकार के भवशूल (आध्यात्मिक, आधिदैविक और आधिभौतिक ताप) नहीं व्यापित होते।

O Lord Rama! Having the sight of your lotus feet, now I am well, my heavy fears have been dispelled. O merciful one! Those whom you favor, they are not affected by the three types of afflictions (spiritual, divine, and worldly).

मैं अत्यंत दुष्ट स्वभाव का राक्षस हूँ। मैंने कभी भी श्रेष्ठ आचरण नहीं किया। जिनका रूप मुनियों के भी ध्यान में नहीं आता, उन प्रभु ने स्वयं हर्षित होकर मुझे हृदय से लगा लिया।

“I am an extremely wicked creature by nature. I have never acted virtuously. The gods themselves, whose forms even sages cannot comprehend, took delight in me and embraced me from the heart.”

रामजी! आपकी कृपा और सुख के स्रोत हे। मुझे बहुत खुशी है कि मैंने ब्रह्मा और शिवजी द्वारा सेवित युगल चरण कमलों को अपनी आंखों से देखा।

“O Lord Ram! You are the source of mercy and happiness. I am very fortunate to have seen the lotus feet of the divine couple served by Brahma and Shiva with my own eyes.”

मैं आपको अपने स्वभाव का वर्णन करता हूँ, जो कि काकभुषुण्डि, शिवजी और पार्वतीजी भी जानते हैं। किसी मनुष्य को जड़-चेतन जगत का विरोधी बताया जा सकता है, यदि वह मेरी शरण में आने के लिए भयभीत होकर आए।

“I describe to you my nature, which even Kakbhushundi, Shiva, and Parvati know. A person can be considered an opponent of the conscious world if they come to take shelter in fear.”

मैं एक व्यक्ति को बहुत शीघ्र साधु के समान करता हूं जब वह और मद, मोह तथा नाना प्रकार के छल-कपट को त्याग देता है। माता, पिता, भाई, पुत्र, स्त्री, शरीर, धन, घर, मित्र और परिवार।

I regard a person very much like a saint when he renounces more intoxicants, attachments, and various kinds of deceit. Mother, father, brother, son, wife, body, wealth, home, friend, and family.

मैं आपको एक हिंदी पर्रा प्रदान करूंगा, जैसे कि इन सबके मालिक रूपी निशानों को एकत्रित करके और उन सभी की एक पंजी बनाकर उसके माध्यम से वह व्यक्ति जो अपने मन को मेरे पादों में बंध देता है। (समस्त वाणिज्यिक संबंधों का केंद्र मुझे बना देता है), जो उदार है, जिसे कोई भी इच्छा नहीं है और जिसके मन में खुशी, दुःख और भय नहीं है।

मैं उस प्रिय सज्जन का हृदय में बसने का अनुभव कैसे करता हूं, जिस तरह लोभी व्यक्ति धन को अपने हृदय में बसा लेता है। मुझे सभी प्रकार के संत प्रिय होते हैं। मैं किसी अन्य के बदले में (कृतज्ञतावश) देह नहीं धारण करता।

I experience the dwelling of that beloved virtuous person in my heart, just as a greedy person harbors wealth in their heart. I hold all kinds of saints dear to me. I do not assume a body in exchange for someone else.

मुझे एक हिंदी पर्रा प्रदान करेंगे, जो भक्तिमय (साकार) देवता के अनुयायी हैं, दूसरों के हित में लगे रहते हैं, नैतिकता और नियमों का पालन करते हैं, और जिन्हें ब्राह्मणों के प्रति स्नेह है, वे मनुष्य मेरे प्राणों के समान हैं।

I will provide you with a Hindi paragraph, those who are devotees of the divine (manifested) deity, remain engaged in the welfare of others, adhere firmly to morality and rules, and have affection for the Brahmins, they are like my life breath.

हे रावण! सुनो, तुम्हारे अंदर ऊपर्युक्त सभी गुण हैं। इससे तुम मुझे बहुत प्रिय हो। श्री रामजी के वचन सुनकर सभी वानरों का समूह बोलने लगा – कृपा के समूह श्री रामजी की जय हो।

Hey Ravana! Listen, you possess all the qualities mentioned above. Because of this, you are very dear to me. Hearing the words of Lord Rama, the group of all the monkeys started saying – Victory to Lord Rama, the group of mercy.

प्रभु की वाणी सुनते हैं और उसे कानों के लिए अमृत जानकर विभीषणजी अघाते नहीं हैं। वे बार-बार श्री रामजी के चरण कमलों को पकड़ते हैं, जिसमें अपार प्रेम है, और हृदय में समाता नहीं है।

They listen to the Lord’s words and consider them as nectar for the ears, Vibhishana does not feel tired. They repeatedly hold the lotus feet of Shri Ramji, in which there is immense love and which does not dissolve in the heart.

विभीषण ने कहा- हे देव! हे चराचर जगत्‌ के स्वामी! हे शरणागत के रक्षक! सबके हृदय के भीतर की जानने वाले! सुनिए, मेरे हृदय में पहले कुछ वासना थी। वह प्रभु के चरणों की प्रीति रूपी नदी में बह गई।

Vibhishan said – O God! O Lord of the animate and inanimate world! O protector of the surrendered! O knower of the hearts of all! Listen, there was a desire in my heart before. It flowed into the river of love for the Lord’s feet.

अब तक हे प्रभो! शिवजी के मन को सदैव प्रिय लगने वाली अपनी पवित्र भक्ति मुझे दीजिए। ‘एवमस्तु’ (ऐसा ही हो) कहकर रणधीर प्रभु श्री रामजी ने तुरंत ही समुद्र का जल माँगा।

Lord, now is the time! Give me your holy devotion, which always pleases the mind of Lord Shiva. Saying, “So be it,” Lord Ram, the valiant, immediately asked for the water of the sea.

(और कहा-) हे मित्र! यद्यपि तुम्हारी इच्छा नहीं है, पर जगत्‌ में मेरा दर्शन अमोघ है (वह निष्फल नहीं जाता)। ऐसा कहकर श्री रामजी ने उनको राजतिलक कर दिया। आकाश से पुष्पों की अपार वृष्टि हुई।

(And he said-) O friend! Although it is not your wish, my sight in the world is unfailing (it does not go in vain). Saying this, Lord Ram crowned him. There was a huge rain of flowers from the sky.

श्री रामजी ने रावण के क्रोध की अग्नि में, जो उसकी भाई विभीषण की प्रार्थना की बौछार से प्रचंड हो रही थी, जलते हुए विभीषण को बचा लिया और उसे अखंड राज्य दिया।

शिवजी ने जो धन रावण को दसों सिरों की बलि देने पर दी थी, वही धन श्री रघुनाथजी ने विभीषण को बहुत सकुचते हुए दी।

Lord Ram saved Vibhishan, who was burning in the fire of Ravana’s anger, with the shower of his brother Vibhishan’s prayers and gave him an unbroken kingdom.

The wealth that Shivaji had given to Ravana in exchange for sacrificing ten heads, the same wealth was given very generously by Lord Raghunath to Vibhishan.

ऐसे परम कृपालु प्रभु को छोड़कर जो मनुष्य दूसरे को भजते हैं, वे बिना सींग-पूँछ के पशु हैं। अपना सेवक जानकर श्री रामजी ने विभीषण को अपना लिया। प्रभु का स्वभाव वानरकुल के मन को (बहुत) भाया।

Except for such a supremely merciful Lord, those who worship others are like animals without horns and tails. Recognizing him as his servant, Lord Ram took Vibhishan as his own. The nature of the Lord greatly pleased the minds of the monkey race.

फिर सभी कुछ जानने वाले, सभीके हृदय में बसने वाले, सर्वरूप (सभी रूपों में प्रकट), सभीसे रहित, उदासीन, कारण से (भक्तों पर कृपा करने के लिए) मनुष्य बने हुए तथा राक्षसों के कुल का नाश करने वाले श्री रामजी ने नीति की रक्षा करने वाले वचन बोले।

Then, the one who knows everything resides in everyone’s hearts, manifests in all forms, is beyond everyone, indifferent, became a human for the sake of compassion towards devotees, and to destroy the lineage of demons, Lord Ram spoke words to protect righteousness.

“ये महान वीर वानरराज सुग्रीव और लंकापति विभीषण! सुनो, इस गहरे समुद्र को कैसे पार किया जाए? अनेक जातियों के मगर, साँप और मछलियों से भरा हुआ यह अत्यंत गहरा समुद्र पार करने में सभी तरह से कठिन है।”

“Oh great brave kings Sugriva and Vibhishana! Listen, how can this deep ocean be crossed? Filled with various kinds of crocodiles, snakes, and fishes, this extremely deep ocean is difficult to cross in every way.”

विभीषण ने कहा- हे रघुनाथजी! सुनिए, यद्यपि आपका एक बाण ही करोड़ों समुद्रों को सोखने वाला है, तथापि नीति ऐसी कही गई है कि पहले जाकर समुद्र से प्रार्थना की जाए।

Vibhishana said- Oh Raghunathji! Listen, although your one arrow alone is capable of drying up millions of oceans, but it is advised by wise counsel that one should first go and seek permission from the ocean.

हे ईश्वर! समुद्र आपके कुल में विशाल हैं, वे विचारकर उपाय बतला देंगे। तब रीछ और वानर सेना बिना किसी परिश्रम के समुद्र के पार जा सकेगी।

“O Lord! The oceans are vast in your lineage; they will suggest a thoughtful solution. Then the entire army of bears and monkeys can cross the sea without any effort.”

श्री रामजी ने कहा- हे मित्र! तुमने बहुत अच्छा सुझाव दिया है। यही करें, अगर ईश्वर अनुग्रहकारी हैं। लक्ष्मणजी को यह सलाह अच्छी नहीं लगी। श्री रामजी के वचन सुनकर उन्हें बहुत दुःख हुआ।

Shri Ram said- Hey friend! You have given a very good suggestion. Let’s do this, if God is willing. Lakshman did not like this advice. Hearing Shri Ram’s words, he felt very sad.

लक्ष्मणजी ने कहा-“हे नाथ! दैव का कौन भरोसा! मन में क्रोध कीजिए (ले आइए) और समुद्र को सुखा डालिए। यह दैव तो कायर के मन का एक आधार (तसल्ली देने का उपाय) है। आलसी लोग ही दैव-दैव पुकारा करते हैं।”

“Lakshman said, ‘Oh Lord! Who can trust fate! Let anger arise in your mind and dry up the sea. This fate is just a way to comfort the cowardly mind. Lazy people are the ones who call out to fate.'”

ऐसा सुनकर श्री रघुवीर हंसकर बोले- ऐसे ही करेंगे, मन में धैर्य रखो। ऐसा कहकर छोटे भाई को समझाकर प्रभु श्री रघुनाथजी समुद्र के किनारे गए।

Hearing this, Shri Raghuveer laughed and said, “We will do it this way, keep patience in mind.” Saying this, after explaining to his younger brother, Lord Shri Raghunathji went near the sea.

उन्होंने पहले शीर्ष पर नमस्कार किया। फिर किनारे पर कुश फैलाया और वहाँ बैठ गए। इसी बीच, जब विभीषण भगवान के पास पहुंचे, तब रावण ने उनके पीछे दूतों को भेज दिया।

Once they arrived, they first greeted with a bow. Then, they spread some grass and sat down on the shore. Meanwhile, when Vibhishan reached the Lord, Ravana had already sent his messengers after him.

चालाकी से लंका में आगमन करने वाले वानर को देखकर उन्होंने समझ लिया कि वह लंका में पहुंच गया है। वे अपने मन में ईश्वर के गुणों की प्रशंसा करने लगे।

Seeing the cleverly arriving monkey in Lanka, he understood that he had reached Lanka. He started praising the virtues of God in his mind.

फिर उन्होंने प्रेम के साथ श्री रामजी के स्वभाव की महिमा की, और उन्होंने दुराव (कपट वेश) को भूल गए। सभी वानर जान गए कि ये शत्रु के दूत हैं और उन्होंने सभी को बांधकर सुग्रीव के पास ले आए।

Then, they appeared in their true form and, with extreme love, began to glorify the nature of Shri Ramji, forgetting the deceitful disguise. All the monkeys knew that these were the messengers of the enemy, and they captured them all and brought them to Sugriva.

सभी वानरों को सुनो, सुग्रीव ने कहा- राक्षसों के अंग-भंग करके भेज दो। वानर दौड़े दूतों को बाँधकर, और सेना के चारों ओर घुमाया।

Listen to all the monkeys, Sugriva said – Break the limbs of the demons and send them. The monkeys ran, captured the messengers, and moved around the army.

जैसे कि वानरों ने उन्हें कई तरीकों से पीटना शुरू किया। वे बेचारे चिल्लाते रहते थे, फिर भी वानरों ने उन्हें छोड़ा नहीं। (तब दूतों ने पुकारकर कहा-) जो हमारे नाक और कान काटेगा, उसे कोसलाधीश श्री रामजी की सौगंध है।

As the monkeys began to beat them in many ways. They were crying out in distress, yet the monkeys did not let them go. (Then the messengers cried out and said) Whoever cuts off our noses and ears, he is bound by the oath of Lord Kosala’s master Sri Ram.

यह जानकर कि लक्ष्मणजी ने सभी को निकट बुलाया, सभी अच्छे तरह से ध्यान दें। उन्हें बड़ी दया आई, जिससे उन्होंने तुरंत ही राक्षसों को मुक्त कर दिया। (और उनसे कहा-) रावण के हाथ में इस पत्र को देना (और कहना-) हे कुलघातक! लक्ष्मण के वचनों (संदेश) को बचाओ।

Upon hearing this, Lakshman called everyone nearby. He felt great compassion, which led him to immediately release the demons. (And he said to them-) Deliver this letter into Ravana’s hands (and say-) O destroyer of lineage! Preserve the words (message) of Lakshman.

फिर उस अन्धेरे से जबानी यह मेरा उदार (कृपा से भरा हुआ) संदेश कहना कि सीताजी को देकर उनसे (श्री रामजी से) मिलो, नहीं तो तुम्हारा काल आ गया (समझो)

“Then go to that fool and tell him this generous (kindly filled) message verbally that meet Sita ji by giving her (from Shri Ramji), otherwise your time has come (understand).”

लक्ष्मणजी के पादों में सिर झुकाकर, श्री रामजी के गुणों का वर्णन करते हुए दूत तुरंत ही चल दिए। श्री रामजी की महिमा का गान करते हुए वे लंका में पहुंचे और उन्होंने रावण के पादों में सिर झुकाया।

Bowing his head at the feet of Lakshmanji, the messenger immediately began describing the virtues of Shri Ramji. Singing the praises of Shri Ramji’s glory, they arrived in Lanka and bowed their head at the feet of Ravana.

दसमुख रावण ने हँसते हुए कहा- “अरे शुक! तुम्हारी कैसी खबर है? अपना स्वास्थ्य क्यों नहीं पूछते?” फिर उसने विभीषण के बारे में सुना, जिसकी मृत्यु अब करीब आ गई है।

Ravana with ten heads laughed and asked, “Hey Shuk! Why don’t you tell me how you are? Why don’t you inquire about your well-being?” Then he heard the news about Vibhishan, whose death is now very near.

मूर्ख ने राज्य करते हुए लंका को छोड़ दिया। अब वह जौ के कीट की तरह नष्ट हो जाएगा (जैसे जौ के साथ घुन भी पिस जाता है, वैसे ही वह नर वानरों के साथ भी मारा जाएगा)। फिर उसने भालू और वानरों की सेना के बारे में पूछा, जो कठिन समय के प्रेरणा से यहाँ आई है।

The fool, while ruling, abandoned Lanka. Now he will be destroyed like the pest of barley (just as barley is crushed along with its husk, he will be killed along with the monkeys and bears). Then he asked about the condition of the army of bears and monkeys, which has come here under difficult circumstances.

और जिनका जीवन संरक्षक कोमल चित्त वाला बेचारा समुद्र में बदल गया है। अर्थात, अगर समुद्र न होता तो राक्षस उन्हें अब तक मारकर खा चुके होते। फिर वह तपस्वियों के बारे में बताए, जिनके हृदय में मेरा बड़ा डर है।

And those whose protector, the poor, soft-hearted ocean has turned into (meaning) if there was no ocean between them and the demons, the demons would have killed them by now. Then tell about those ascetics, in whose hearts I have a great fear.

क्या उनसे तुम्हारी मुलाकात हुई थी या वे मेरे सुयश को सुनकर ही लौट गए थे? क्यों तुम शत्रु सेना की तेज़ी और बल का वर्णन नहीं कर रहे हो? तुम्हारा मन बहुत चकित हो रहा है।

Did you meet them or did they return after hearing my message? Why aren’t you describing the speed and strength of the enemy army? Your mind is getting very surprised.

(दूत ने कहा-) “हे नाथ! जैसे आपने दया करके पूछा है, वैसे ही क्रोध छोड़कर मेरी बात सुनिए। जब आपके छोटे भाई श्री रामजी से मिलने गए, तो श्री रामजी ने उन्हें तुरंत ही राजतिलक किया।”

(The messenger said-) “O Lord! Just as you have asked with kindness, please listen to me leaving aside anger. When your younger brother went to meet Shri Ramji, as soon as he arrived, Shri Ramji crowned him.”

हम रावण के दूत थे, और जब वानरों ने यह सुना कि हम रावण के दूत हैं, तो उन्होंने हमें पकड़कर बहुत कष्ट दिया, तकलीफें दी, और हमारे नाक और कान काटने लगे। श्री रामजी की शपथ देने पर कहीं उन्होंने हमें छोड़ दिया।

We were messengers of Ravana, and when the monkeys heard that we were Ravana’s messengers, they caught us and caused us a lot of trouble, even started cutting our noses and ears. Upon swearing by Shri Ramji, somewhere they let us go.

हे नाथ! आपने श्री रामजी की सेना पूछी है, जिसका वर्णन सौ करोड़ मुखों से भी नहीं किया जा सकता। वहाँ अनेक रंगों के भालू और वानर सेना है, जो भयानक मुख और विशाल शरीर वाले हैं।

O Lord! You have asked about Shri Ramji’s army, which cannot be described even with a hundred crore mouths. There is an army of bears and monkeys of many colors, which are terrible-faced, with huge bodies, and terrifying.

जिसने नगर को जलाया और आपके पुत्र अक्षय कुमार को मारा, उसका बल तो सभी वानरों में थोड़ा है। अनगिनत नामों वाले विशालकाय और भयंकर योद्धा हैं। उनमें अनगिनत हाथियों का बल है और वे विशाल हैं।

The one who burnt the city and killed your son Akshay Kumar, his strength is little among all the monkeys. There are numerous large and terrifying warriors with countless names. They have the strength of countless elephants and they are very huge.

द्विविद, मयंद, नील, नल, अंगद, गद, विकटास्य, दधिमुख, केसरी, निशठ, शठ और जाम्बवान, ये सभी बल के संग्रह हैं।

Dvivid, Mayand, Neel, Nal, Angad, Gad, Vikatasya, Dadhimukh, Kesari, Nishath, Shath, and Jambavan, all of these are a collection of strength.

ये सभी वानर सुग्रीव के समान बलवान हैं और इनके जैसे (एक-दो नहीं) करोड़ों हैं, उन्हें गिनना कौन सकता है। श्री रामजी की कृपा से उनमें अतुलनीय बल है। वे तीनों लोकों को तृण के समान (तुच्छ) समझते हैं।

All these monkeys are as powerful as Sugriva and there are (not one or two) but crores like them, who can count them. By the grace of Shri Ramji, they have incomparable strength. They consider the three worlds as insignificant as straw.

हे दशग्रीव! मैंने सुना है कि अठारह पद्म एकल वानरों के सेनापति हैं। हे नाथ! उस सेना में आपको हराने वाला कोई वानर नहीं है।

O Ravana! I have heard that Atarah Padm is the commander of the single monkeys. O Lord! No monkey in that army cannot defeat you in battle.

सभी अत्यंत क्रोध से विचलित हो जाते हैं, लेकिन श्री रघुनाथजी उन्हें कभी आज्ञा नहीं देते। हम मछलियों और साँपों सहित समुद्र को सोंच लेंगे। अन्यथा, हम उसे बड़े-बड़े पर्वतों से भरकर पूर (पाट) देंगे।

In extreme anger, everyone loses control, but Shri Raghunathji never gives them orders. We will dry up the ocean, including fish and snakes. Otherwise, we will fill it up with big mountains.

रावण को धूल में मिलाकर हम कर देंगे। सभी वानर ऐसा ही वादा कर रहे हैं। सभी निडर हैं, इसी तरह गरजते और डपटते हैं मानो वे लंका को निगलने के लिए तैयार हों।

We will crush Ravana into dust. All the monkeys are saying the same thing. They are all naturally fearless, roaring and pounding as if they want Lanka to be swallowed whole.

सभी वानर-भालू स्वाभाविक रूप से वीर हैं, फिर भी उनके शिर पर प्रभु (सर्वेश्वर) श्री रामजी का आशीर्वाद है। हे रावण! वे युद्ध में लाखों कल्युगों को जीत सकते हैं।

“All the monkeys and bears are naturally brave, yet they are blessed by Lord (Sarveshwar) Shri Ramji. O Ravana! They can win millions of ages in battle.”

श्री रामचंद्रजी के तेज (सामर्थ्य), बल और बुद्धि की अधिकता को लाखों शेष भी नहीं गा सकते। वे एक ही बाण से सैकड़ों समुद्रों को सोख सकते हैं, परंतु नीति निपुण श्री रामजी ने (नीति की रक्षा के लिए) आपके भाई से उपाय पूछा।

Shri Ramchandraji’s speed (efficiency), strength, and intelligence, which millions cannot match. They can dry up hundreds of seas with just one arrow, but the tactful Shri Ramji asked your brother for a solution (to protect the policy).

जिस प्रकार उन्होंने (आपके भाई ने) बोला, उसके प्रभाव से श्री रामजी समुद्र से मार्ग माँग रहे हैं, उनके हृदय में कृपा भी है (इसलिए उन्होंने उसे सोचा नहीं)। रावण ने दूत के वचन सुनते ही अच्छा हँसा (और कहा-) जैसे इस प्रकार की बुद्धि है, वैसे ही वानरों को सहायता की है।

When they hear his words, Shri Ramji requests away from the ocean, they also have mercy in their hearts (that’s why they don’t reject it). Ravan laughed heartily upon hearing the messenger’s words (and said-) Only such wisdom has made the monkeys helpers.

स्वाभाविक रूप से डरपोक विभीषण ने उनके (रावण के) वचनों के साक्षात्कार से समुद्र को उलझन में डाल दिया है। अरे मूर्ख! झूठी प्रशंसा क्या फायदा होता है? मैंने स्वयं शत्रु (राम) की शक्ति और समझ का अनुभव किया है।

Naturally fearful Vibhishana has confused the ocean by hearing his (Ravana’s) words. Hey idiot! What is the benefit of false praise? I myself have experienced the power and understanding of the enemy (Ram).

जिसके रावण के वचन सुनकर दूत का क्रोध बढ़ गया, उसने अवसर जानकर लक्ष्मण द्वारा दी गई पत्रिका निकाली, उसे विभीषण जैसा डरपोक मंत्री होने के लिए संसार में विजय और विभूति कहाँ?

श्री रामजी के छोटे भाई लक्ष्मण ने यह पत्रिका दी है। हे नाथ! इसे बचवाकर छाती ठंडी कीजिए। रावण ने हँसकर उसे बाएँ हाथ से लिया और मंत्री को बुलवाकर वह मूर्ख उसे बँचाने लगा।

The one whose rage increased upon hearing Ravana’s words, knowing the opportunity, Lakshmana’s letter was taken out, where is victory and glory in the world for one who is a cowardly minister like Vibhishana?

The younger brother of Shri Ram, Lakshman, gave this magazine. O lord! Protect it and cool your chest. Ravana laughed and took it with his left hand and, calling the minister, the fool began to save it.

परियों के प्रमुख बोले, “हे अविवेकी! तुम्हें समझना चाहिए कि केवल वचनों से ही अपने आप को रखो, अपने परिवार को नष्ट न करो। तुम श्रीराम के खिलाफ होते हुए भी तुम्हें विष्णु, ब्रह्मा और महेश की शरण में जाने से नहीं बचा सकोगे।”

या तो गर्व छोड़ दें और अपने छोटे भाई विभीषण की तरह प्रभु के पादकमलों में एक भ्रमर बन जाएँ। अथवा हे दुष्ट! श्रीरामजी के बाण रूप अग्नि में परिवार सहित पतंग हो जाए (जो भी अच्छा लगे, उसे करें)।

The leader of the fairies said, “Hey ignorant one! You should understand that only by words can you keep yourself, do not destroy your family. Even if you are against Shri Ram, you will not be saved from taking refuge in Vishnu, Brahma, and Mahesh.”

either leave the pride and become a bee in the lotus feet of the Lord like your younger brother Vibhishana. Or hey wicked one! Become a moth in the fire of arrows of Lord Shri Ram along with your family (whichever you prefer, do that).

पत्रिका सुनते ही रावण भयभीत हो गया, लेकिन मुस्कुराता हुआ वह सबको सुनाकर कहने लगा- जैसे कोई पृथ्वी पर पड़ा हुआ हाथ से आकाश को पकड़ने की कोशिश करता हो, वैसे ही यह छोटा तपस्वी वाग्विलास करता है।

Upon hearing the news, Ravana became fearful, but with a smile on his face, he told everyone – like someone trying to catch the sky with their hand while on earth, similarly, this young ascetic indulges in playful antics.

शुक (दूत) ने कहा- हे नाथ! अहंकार को छोड़कर (इस पत्र में लिखी) सभी बातों को सच मानिए। क्रोध छोड़कर मेरी वाणी सुनिए। हे नाथ! श्री रामजी से द्वेष त्याग दीजिए।

The messenger Shuk said – O Lord! Leave aside pride and consider all the words written in this letter as true. Listen to my words leaving aside anger. O Lord! Abandon enmity towards Shri Ram.

यद्यपि श्री रघुवीर समस्त लोकों के ईश्वर हैं, पर उनका स्वभाव बहुत ही नर्म है। मिलते ही प्रभु आप पर अनुग्रह करेंगे और आपका एक भी अपराध वे हृदय में नहीं रखेंगे।

Although Shri Raghuvir is the lord of all people, his nature is extremely gentle. Upon meeting, the Lord will shower his grace upon you and will not keep any of your offenses in his heart.

जानकीजी को श्री रघुनाथजी को अर्पित कर दीजिए। हे प्रभु! मेरा यही सन्देश सुना दीजिए। जब उस (दूत) ने जानकीजी को अर्पण करने का आदेश दिया, तब दुष्ट रावण ने उसे धक्का दिया।

Please give Sita to Shri Raghunathji. O Lord! Convey my message. When the messenger ordered to give Sita, then the wicked Ravana kicked him.

वह भी (विभीषण की तरह) चरणों में सिर नवाकर वहीं चला, जहाँ कृपासागर श्री रघुनाथजी थे। प्रणाम करके उसने अपनी कहानी सुनाई और श्री रामजी की कृपा से अपनी गति (मुनिरूप) पाई।

He also bowed his head at the feet just like Vibhishana and went to the place where the ocean of mercy, Shri Raghunathji, was present. After paying his respects, he narrated his story and attained his true form through the grace of Shri Ram.

(शिवजी कहते हैं-) हे भवानी! वह ज्ञानी मुनि था, अगस्त्य ऋषि के शाप से राक्षस बन गया था। बार-बार श्री रामजी के पादों की वंदना करके वह मुनि अपने आश्रम को चला गया।

(Shivaji says-) O Bhavani! He was a knowledgeable sage, who had turned into a demon due to the curse of Sage Agastya. After repeatedly worshipping the feet of Shri Ram, the sage returned to his hermitage.

इस दौरान तीन दिन बीत गए, किन्तु समुद्र विनय नहीं मानता। तब श्री रामजी क्रोध के साथ बोले- बिना भय के प्रेम नहीं होती।

During this time, three days passed, but the ocean did not yield. Then Shri Ram said angrily – Love without fear is not possible.

हे लक्ष्मण! धनुष-बाण लाओ, मैं अग्निबाण से समुद्र को सूख डालूँ। मूर्ख से विनीत, कुटिल के साथ प्रेम, स्वाभाविक ही कंजूस से सुंदर नीति (उदारता का उपदेश)।

Hey Lakshman! Bring the bow and arrows, so that I may dry up the ocean with the Agni arrow. Humility with the fool, love with the cunning, and naturally, the beautiful policy of generosity with the miser.

ममता में फँसे हुए मनुष्य से ज्ञान की कहानी, अत्यंत लोभी से वैराग्य का वर्णन, क्रोधी से शांति की बात और कामी से भगवान्‌ की कथा, इनका वैसा ही परिणाम होता है जैसा ऊसर में बीज बोने से होता है।

The story of knowledge from a person trapped in attachment, the description of renunciation from extreme greed, the talk of peace from an angry person, and the story of God from a materialist, all have the same result as sowing seeds in the sand, meaning it goes in vain.

इसी कहकर श्री रघुनाथजी ने धनुष चढ़ाया। यह विचार लक्ष्मणजी को बहुत पसंद आया। प्रभु ने भयानक (अग्नि) बाण को तैयार किया, जिससे समुद्र के हृदय के अंदर अग्नि की ज्वाला उठी।

Saying this, Shri Raghunathji strung the bow. This idea pleased Lakshman very much. The Lord prepared the terrifying (fire) arrow, which ignited the flames within the heart of the ocean.

लेकिन, साँप और मछलियों का समूह व्याकुल हो गया। जब समुद्र ने जीवों को जलते देखा, तो सोने के थाल में अनेक मणियों (रत्नों) को भरकर अभिमान छोड़कर वह एक ब्राह्मण के रूप में उपस्थित हुआ।

However, the groups of snakes and fish became agitated. When the ocean saw the creatures burning, it filled a golden plate with many gems (jewels) and, abandoning pride, it appeared in the form of a Brahmin.

काकभुशुण्डिजी कहते हैं- हे गरुड़जी! सुनिए, चाहे कोई करोड़ों उपाय करके सींचे, पर केला तो काटने पर ही फलता है। नीच विनय से नहीं मानता, वह डाँटने पर ही झुकता है (रास्ते पर आता है)।

Kakbhushundi Ji says – Hey Garud Ji! Listen, no matter how many crores are spent on watering, the banana only bears fruit when it is cut. It does not accept with humility, it bends only when scolded (comes in the way).

समुद्र ने भयभीत होकर प्रभु के चरण पकड़कर कहा- हे ईश्वर! मेरे सभी दोषों को क्षमा कीजिए। हे प्रभु! आकाश, वायु, अग्नि, जल और पृथ्वी- इन सभी की कर्म स्वभाव से ही जड़ है।

The ocean, in fear, clasped the Lord’s feet and said, “Oh Lord! Please forgive all my faults. Oh Lord! The actions of the sky, air, fire, water, and earth are all inherently rooted in nature.”

आपकी प्रेरणा से माया ने इन्हें सृष्टि के लिए उत्पन्न किया गया है, सभी ग्रंथों ने यही गाया है। जिसके लिए स्वामी की तरह की आज्ञा है, वह उसी तरह से रहने में सुखी होता है।

By your inspiration, Maya has created them for creation, this is what all the scriptures sing. One who has the command like the Lord, he remains happy in the same way.

“परमेश्वर ने उत्तम किया जिसने मुझे शिक्षा (दंड) दी, परंतु मर्यादा (जीवों का स्वभाव) भी आपकी ही निर्मिति है। मूर्ख, अज्ञानी, नीच वर्ग, पशु और स्त्री – ये सब शिक्षा के अधिकारी हैं।”

“God did well who gave me a Lesson (punishment), but dignity (nature of beings) is also created by you. Fool, ignorant, low class, animal, and woman – they are all authorities of education.”

प्रभु के प्रताप से मैं उदास हो जाऊंगा और सेना उच्च गति से चली जाएगी, इसमें मेरा गर्व नहीं होगा। मेरी सांगत का सम्मान किया जाएगा (मेरी मर्यादा नहीं रहेगी)। तथापि, प्रभु की आज्ञा का पालन करना हमारा धर्म है (आपकी आज्ञा का उल्लंघन नहीं हो सकता)। ऐसा वेद कहते हैं। अब जो कार्य आपको ठीक लगे, मैं तत्काल वही करूँ।

By the glory of the Lord, I will become humble and the army will descend swiftly, in which I will not take pride. The honor of my companions will be respected (my dignity will not be diminished). However, it is our duty to obey the Lord’s command (violation of your command is not possible). The Vedas proclaim this. Now, whatever task you find appropriate, I will do it immediately.

समुद्र के अत्यंत विनम्र शब्दों को सुनकर दयालु श्री रामजी ने मुस्कुराते हुए कहा- हे पिताजी! जैसे कि वानरों की सेना पार कर जाती है, वह योजना बताएं।

After hearing the extremely humble words of the ocean, merciful Sri Ram smiled and said, “Oh Father! Just as the army of monkeys descends, tell me the way.”

समुद्र ने उपदेश दिया, “हे नाथ! नील और नल वानर भाइयों हैं। वे एक ऋषि की कृपा से लाभान्वित हुए थे। उनके स्पर्श से ही विशाल पहाड़ भी आपके शक्ति के प्रति विश्वास को प्रकट करते हैं।”

The ocean imparted wisdom, “O lord! Neel and Nal are monkey brothers. They were blessed by a sage. Even the mighty mountains float on the sea with just their touch, reflecting your power.”

मैं भी भगवान की महिमा को हृदय में धारण करता हूं और अपने शक्ति के अनुसार (जहाँ तक मैं सक्षम हूं) सहायता करूंगा। हे नाथ! इस प्रकार समुद्र को बांधो, ताकि आपका सुंदर यश तीनों लोकों में गूंजे।

I also hold the glory of the Lord in my heart and will assist according to my strength (as far as I am capable). O lord! Bind the ocean in such a way that your beautiful fame echoes in all three worlds.

मेरे उत्तर तट पर बसे पाप के राशि के दुष्ट मनुष्यों का वध करें, इस बाण से। श्री रामचंद्रजी, जो कृपालु और योधा हैं, ने समुद्र के दुख को सुनकर तुरंत ही उसे हर लिया (अर्थात्‌ उन दुष्टों का वध कर दिया)।

Eliminate the wicked humans residing on my northern shores, the perpetrators of sin, with this arrow. Upon hearing the agony of the ocean, the compassionate and valiant Lord Rama swiftly vanquished it (meaning, he slew those evildoers with the arrow).

समुद्र ने श्री रामचंद्रजी के विशाल बल और पराक्रम को देखकर आनंदित होकर संतुष्ट हो गया। उसने उन दुष्टों के सभी अपराधों की कथा प्रभु के समक्ष प्रस्तुत की। फिर चरणों की वंदना करके समुद्र वापस चला गया।

Upon witnessing the immense strength and valor of Lord Rama, the ocean became joyful and content. It recounted all the misdeeds of those evildoers before the Lord. Then, after offering reverence to his feet, the ocean departed.

समुद्र ने अपने निवास स्थान की ओर चला गया, और यह सलाह श्री रघुनाथजी को प्रिय आयी। यह चरित्र कलियुग के पापों को नष्ट करने वाला है, और इसे तुलसीदास ने अपनी बुद्धि के अनुसार गाया है। श्री रघुनाथजी के गुण समूह सुख के आधार, संदेह का नाश करने वाले और विषाद का दमन करने वाले हैं। हे मूर्ख मन! तू संसार की सभी आशाएं और भरोसे को छोड़कर निरंतर इनकी गाथा गा और सुन।

The ocean returned to its abode, and this advice was pleasing to Lord Raghunath. This narrative is capable of eradicating the sins of Kali Yuga, and it was sung by Tulsidas according to his wisdom. The qualities of Lord Raghunath are the foundation of happiness, they dispel doubts, and they quell sorrows. O foolish mind! Abandon all worldly hopes and dependencies and continuously sing and listen to their glory.

श्री रघुनाथजी का गुणगान सभी सुंदर मंगलों को प्रदान करने वाला है। जो इसे सम्मान के साथ सुनेंगे, वे किसी जहाज के सहारे के बिना ही भवसागर को तर जाएँगे।

The praise of Lord Raghunath is the giver of all beautiful blessings. Those who listen to it with respect will cross the ocean of existence without any need for a ship.
